Am I using the Internet wrong?

While this isn’t really related to gaming directly, I am concerned that I am doing things wrong.

Listening to all the talk this weekend about the Facebook IPO, I started wondering if I was different from everyone else. Numerous news stories covered how Facebook was going to use advertising to make a profit or how people’s use of Google is “based on an intent to buy something“, and I started feeling like I was not paying enough attention to the web pages I go to.

While I am not an avid user of Facebook, I do use Google every day. I usually check for gaming news and reviews. Sometimes I check on how to spec my warlock, how to craft in SWTOR, or what’s the best speed fitting for my Stiletto, but I don’t see my usage pattern revolving around buying something. I don’t even attend to advertisements on most pages. Facebook is a place I go to see if there is anything new in my friends’ lives that they want to world to know, which usually does not involve announcing that they just bought a new bag of Doritos on sale at Vons. Even when watching TV, unless the commercial has a dog (particularly the Traveler’s Insurance one) or other cute animal in it, I just hit the fast forward button and blaze through to the next show segment. I guess I am more of a researcher or information consumer than a buyer when I go to these places. If I want to buy something, I go to a store like Amazon or Ebay, but Google is more of my reference library rather than a shopping mall.

Does anyone else worry they are not following the standard practices of a proper Internet user (or at least what the business folk expect out of users)?

  1. Funny way to look at it. I do wonder about how Facebook could be worth so much. Personally I have never clicked on an advertisement there. I also spend little time on it, to the point that I have considered deleting the account. As to buying things, I have specific websites I go to to buy certain things. I do on occasion use google to search for stores when I need to buy something different. However, I make it a habit to not use the sites that google has ads for.
