A Look at Upcoming Events

Didn't do much in the way of gaming yesterday or today. Played a bit of WoT Blitz and went through my daily routine in Wurm, but I've already reported on that this week. Without my own gaming to talk about, I turn to some upcoming events to mention. In chronological order, they are the World of Warcraft Warlords of Draenor event next week, the League of Legends World Championships in September and October, and the America's Cup in 2017.

This event looks like it will focus exclusively on the Warlords of Draenor expansion as opposed to BlizzCon which takes place in November. According to the email I got, there will be a premiere of the WoD cinematic, interviews with designers, the release of a new animated miniseries, and the announcement of the Draenor launch date. I wonder if there is some pressing need for WoW to be in the media 2 months before BlizzCon? With the typical summer doldrums and end of the expansion apathy, could Warcraft be having more trouble than usual keeping interest? Or do they know there will be a longer than expected delay before the next update? Guess we'll find out something on August 14th in L.A. or online at worldofwarcraft.com.

Taking place in a time zone far, far away from the west coast of America, the World Championship of League of Legends will be going on in the middle of the night during September and October. I'm not too worried since I am sure the matches will be posted on YouTube by the time I wake up. It's not like knowing who won is going to make much difference in my enjoyment of the games – the plays are still going to be made whether I watch them live or in replay. In any case, the 16 team group stage begins September 18 in Taiwan and ends with the finals on October 19 in Seoul, Korea.

Finally, since Oracle Team USA won the 34th America's Cup last year, they get to set the location for the 35th event, and the final two choices are Bermuda and San Diego. I am personally pulling for San Diego, but I know I am biased. After watching the races on my Tivo last year, I would love to be able to hop down to San Diego Bay to watch a race or two. Back in the early 1990s, a number of cup races were held here in San Diego, but they were off the coast a bit – viewable only if you had a boat yourself. The course proposed for 2017 goes right through the bay and has a lot of potential viewing areas.

I'd love to see those huge catamarans with their 40 meter masts sailing in person, and if I were a sailor, I'd want to stay away from the Bermuda Triangle when trying to run a race, so I hope they sail in San Diego.
