Trying out Civilization V again

Following up on yesterday's post, I decided to start on a quest to play a more diverse set of games. To that end, I fired up Steam and looked across my 96 games and selected Civilization V.

Last time I played Civ was back in March when I worked through the tutorial. Well, I got frustrated with the game back then because the tutorial did not have a save feature and I guess I was pretty pissed since it's been almost 5 months since I loaded it up.

This time around, I went with a standard game to avoid the frustration.

Chieftain is not a very hard setting and I went with normal barbarians, but since I have not played anything other than the tutorial, I figure it'll be a good start.

I ended up with Germany as my civ and was able to get in 30 turns before I had to pause and save the game. Germany gets Panzers as a special unit and the Hanse as a special building. Not much help,in the early game, but if I make it to the modern era, they will be a force to take over the world.

As in previous Civ titles, the first bunch of turns are typically spent setting up your first couple of towns and trying to get the lay of the land. I found city-states Antwerp and Jerusalem and a couple of my adversaries – Portugal and Babylon.

The first ruin I found upgraded my warrior to a spearman which has proven useful in fighting the barbarians and it let me focus on building a scout, a worker, an archer and a settler as my first units. As for technologies, I've been pretty scattered, starting with pottery, mining, animal husbandry, and trapping. I found writing from a ruin so I think I'm doing well in the research area, and am currently working on Bronze Working so I can spot the iron deposits nearby.

As you can see from the map (I'm actually the 2 grey areas towards the top), I've got plenty of room for expansion between where I'm at and my opponents ( blue is Babylon and yellow is Portugal), so I'm working on getting plenty of settlers cranked out currently.

30 turns is not much, but it's a start, and since I can save this game, I'm gonna try to play this one to completion. I'll keep updating here as things progress.

This is post 8 in my Blaugust Challenge.

  1. I’ve only recently started playing Civ too – I have a two player with my boyfriend where I’m China and a total warmonger with 15+ cities (I’ve annexed every one I’ve own and now I’m making so much gold) and then I have a single player as the Celts where I’m making no gold but my religion is strong – I think I’m going to go for a culture win eventually but I don’t know, it’s just fun to play 😀 I love that you are documenting your game 🙂
