FTL is A OK

A few months ago, during the Newbie Blogger Initiative someone, I believe it was Stubborn (@SheeptheDiamond – http://sheepthediamond.wordpress.com/) recommended a game called FTL. Today, I decided to give it a shot – at least on my iPad.

FTL stands for Faster Than Light, and it is a spaceship simulator. There is a version for iPad (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ftl-faster-than-light/id833951143?mt=8) which I tried, and a one on Steam, which I downloaded, but haven't played with yet.

I only had enough time to play through the tutorial, but it was very informative and previews what looks like a fun game.

My trusty ship

The basic idea is that you pilot a ship called the Kestrel through space defending the Federation from evildoers. As captain of the Kestrel, you control how your ship is powered, manned and armed. Each component of the ship is in its own section and you can power them individually or send crew in to man the station to get bonuses.

There's the bad guy on the right

In combat, you chose which weapons to arm and what parts of the enemy ship to target. The game recommends shooting shields and enemy weapons, but you can target the holodeck if you want.

Oh the places you can go...

After combat, assuming you won (I don't know what happens if you lose), you get to loot the field and arm new weapons, make repairs, and upgrade your ship before you head off to the next sector of space.

On the whole, the tutorial was fun and I look forward to playing this game during my down times. There is a pause feature so if my 5 minute break is up, I should be able to put the combat on hold until my next break – I like that.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna start a real mission and I'll let you know how things go.

This is post 14 in my Blaugust Challenge.

  1. FTL is such a moreish game. Thinks can go from bad to worse in a matter of minutes. But that’s half the attraction and why I have nearly put in 100 hours of gameplay.

The Advanced editions adds some new mechanics, but you can opt to play in standard mode which give you the games originally released.

Good luck with your play throughs

    • I can see what you mean. I played a few battles this morning and in the first one, things got bad before I realized I should hit the pause button.

I’m sticking with the standard version for now until I get a better feel for the game.

  2. I am looking in the opposite direction. I picked up FTL on Steam and thought it was okay, but a little light for time spent on the computer, so I was wondering if I should grab the iOS version for the iPad as something to poke at when sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office or where ever.

    • I’ve only played through a couple of battles on the iPad, but they are fun and can definitely fill up time spent waiting or coffee breaks. From what I saw of the Steam version, it looks like the port is pretty close and I can understand your feeling about the PC version being ‘light’. I wish I had this during comic-con as it would have made all those lines seem much faster.
