Why Beyond Tannhauser Gate?

I was going to write another weekly TV top 5, but I ran out of time and since it is a holiday weekend, I'm gonna wait until tomorrow for that post. So today, I'll take up Rowan's challenge to explain my blog's name. I thought I already covered it, but I did not find it when I searched the site, so I'll explain in this post.

Why did I name this blog Beyond Tannhauser Gate?

Tannhauser Gate is mentioned in one of my favorite movies of all time – Blade Runner. In particular, it is part of a wonderful monologue delivered by Rutgur Hauer commonly called Tears in Rain.

He is playing Roy Batty, a dying replicant (or android), and these are his final words:

I've… seen things you people wouldn't believe… Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those… moments… will be lost in time, like [small cough] tears… in… rain. Time to die…

It is an incredible speech delivered in a great movie. The dying android talking about his short life and how transient his memories are. How fleeting moments of life are and how it is nearly impossible to accurately pass on life experiences…they will be lost in time.

I like to think of this blog as an attempt to pass on some of the moments that I experience in games and while gaming – my attempt to capture some of those falling raindrops and share them.

If you haven't seen Blade Runner I strongly recommend you do yourself a favor and watch it.

This is post 31 in my Blaugust Challenge.

  1. A great final post to your Blaugust adventure.

Good origin for your blog title, I’m a big fan of Philip K. Dick stories and do enjoy Blade Runner.
