A Closer Look at Ashe

With my 5th game as Ashe co-op against the Bots, I think I feel pretty good about advancing to phase 2 of my gameplay with her. I died 6 times this time, but I picked up 29 kills and while that is way too many deaths, I feel happy about my kills.

I’d have to say this was an interesting game. By 20 minutes I was 11-4, and then I started to really dominate, rattling off 10 straight kills before getting caught by a turret, unable to get away through the minions.

Looking at my 5 bot games as Ashe, I still need to work on last hitting, but I am getting a better handle on the Frost Archer’s abilities.

  1. Focus – her passive adds a critical hit when she hasn’t attacked for a while. This time ranges from 28 seconds at the start down to about 15 seconds at level 18. Actually, it gets quicker based on her critical hit chance, but those are the basic times. Thus far, I haven’t ‘focused’ too much on this, but I should pay more attention to make sure to take advantage of this extra damage.
  2. Frost Shot – her Q slows those hit by a certain amount – anywhere from 15% to 35% for 2 seconds. This ability can eat through mana quickly as it costs 8 mana per attack. When adding Attack speed, you go through mana even faster so I tend to try and only use this against enemy champions, and only when I am considering chasing them.
  3. Volley – her W fires a bunch of arrows in a 60 degree arc in the direction Ashe is facing. Hitting a target applies a hit of Frost Shot, slowing the target. These arrows fly twice as far as her auto attack, but cost 60 mana to fire. The cool down ranges from 16 down to 4 seconds and the damage ranges from 40 to 80 per arrow +100% Attack Damage. I find this is the ability I tend to use most – almost on cool down at later levels and in big fights.
  4. Hawkshot – this has a passive and an active component. The passive adds 3 gold to each unit killed and this can add up to a bunch. The active portion provides sight for 5 seconds at a range of 2500 to 5500. This ability seems to be more useful for the gold, but the vision is pretty good if I can remember to use it. It can help prevent ganks though and I need to use it more.
  5. Enchanted Crystal Arrow – her ultimate fires a big arrow in a straight line across the map. It goes until it hits an enemy champion or flies off the map. If it hits, it does 250 to 600 damage +100% ability power and stuns the target for 1 to 3.5 seconds. Nearby enemies take half damage and are slowed for 3 seconds as well. I’ve found 2 uses for this ability. The first is for attackers that are close by – shoot it in their face so they can’t get away and you can unload your other attacks on them. The second is long range sniping across the map to help allies. The second use is more difficult and can waste your shot, while the first should guarantee a hit.

With a better understanding of Ashe and her abilities, I think I can take her to the next phase and use her in some Team Builder matches.
