League Reboot, Coco at SDCC, and more EQ

Another Movie Reboot

While yesterday, I mentioned getting into a game that had it's origins in the last century – Everquest, today I learned about something with roots in the Victorian Era.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is getting a reboot. According to Variety, 20th Century Fox is going to remake the movie based on the 1999 Alan Moore comic book. I think this has promise since essentially Showtime's Penny Dreadful is a pretty close approximation of what the League would be on television, and it has been very enjoyable. More and more, the current culture seems to be embracing comic books as valid story telling vehicles, and between that, the larger-than-life characters and the steampunk setting, I think this could be a blockbuster. I am definitely looking forward to it.

Coco is coming to San Diego Comic-Con

While this is a bit of old news, I just heard that Conan O'Brien will be taping his show in San Diego during the Comic-Con. I haven't been able to figure out how to get tickets yet since his Teamcoco website only lists dates to the end of June, but I'm gonna keep my eye on the site to see if I can score some tickets. As for SDCC, I did manage to get tickets to Thursday, Friday, and Sunday but Saturday was sold out by the time I got to buy tickets. Each year, it gets more and more difficult to get tickets, but at least I get to keep my streak alive for one more year.

Everquest Realizations

Shortly after creating my Bard in Everquest, I started to remember some of the details of the early game.

Even though the word quest appears in the name of the game, most leveling in Everquest is accomplished by grinding. This can be good or bad – I am kinda ambivalent since I usually try to explore the entire map in games (this leads to a grind in itself). In any case, I forgot the grind for the first hour I was playing, as I looked for quests to perform. I did find the basic quest to deliver a note to my guildmaster, but that seemed to be the end of a questline – at least until I gained a level or two. It also took quite a bit of puzzle solving to figure out how to “give” the note to the guildmaster, but eventually I figured it out. It is really amazing how much current games pamper the player. I think current games spoil players by the huge exclaimation points indicating questgivers or the map highlighting where objectives are. Its obvious that while EQ may have been the first popular MMO (or one of the first), it was not the type of game to hold a player's hand. How lazy have we become?
