Something LoL can learn from HotS

One thing I really like about Heroes of the Storm is that they severely handicap new champions by limiting their abilities. Prior to attaining levels with a particular champion you are limited to a subset of their abilities. I think this is a wonderful mechanism for forcing players to, at the least, become somewhat familiar with their champions. It forces people to play a few games with their champion to understand their abilities and I think this is wonderful. There have been numerous instances in League of Legends where I fully believe that players in a ranked game just purchased their champion and never played it before. Now that League of Legends has added in champion levels perhaps they can do something similar. Even though the champion levels don't do anything or make any difference, it would be nice to have a summoner required to gain a couple 'levels' for a champion before they are allowed to play them in ranked competition.

  1. I believe that’s what the purpose of the Mastery system is, but it doesn’t seem to limit you from playing a champion you just purchased in Ranked. The only restriction to playing ranked games is that you have reached summoner level 30. I can see where it would be beneficial to force players to at least master a champion before being able to use it in ranked, because that would probably take 20 or so games as that champion (maybe more, I haven’t leveled one past rank 3) to be well versed. Regardless, the two systems are distinctly different, so I don’t see where it would work unless exactly how I described.
