Blaugust Day 7 – Evergreen Civilization

Over on the Blaugust nook in the forum there are a number of writing prompts and since today I was pressed for time with a lot of busyness at work, I decided to pull one of those out and take a look at it.

Void from A Green Mushroom asks if there are any evergreen games that you play and by evergreen he means games or series of games that you continually go back to time and time again. I have to say that Sid Meiers Civilization series would be my main evergreen game series.

I started playing Civ 2 way back in college and have been playing the series on and off ever since. I don't always complete games but I love the set up, the design, and the strategy of starting out a new civilization – building up a number of cities and at least getting through some of the early stages and early fights. Throughout the years there have been numerous updates to the user interface, to the civilizations, to the game mechanics – from religion to politics to diplomacy to all kinds of changes. They even updated it from an isometric point of view to a hexagonal map which significantly changed the way units can move and interact with each other. And in the current version I really enjoy the bombardment and flanking rules. But then again, I don't even know everything about this current version – even though I've played it a bunch and it's been out for a few years now. I'd probably say that I have at least one game in progress almost all the time but like I said I don't finish them all, I usually don't finish most of them. That's why I've got it on my gamer to-do list.

In any case, I'd say Civ is my evergreen game.

It's still not too late to join Blaugust – just go to the initiative page at Tales of the Aggronaut or take a look at the Blaugust Nook on Anook.

  1. Most definitely. This is a series I can almost always come back to and lose 10 to 15 hours of sleep over. God help me when a new one comes.
