Blaugust Day 10 – Classes, Gangplank, and Scr.ee

Thoughts on Classes

Yesterday, Murf over at Murf Vs mentioned his thoughts on class differences in Warcraft and FFXIV and I found the article pretty interesting. I've not played Final Fantasy much to this point, so I don't have much of an opinion on their class = job concept, but I did play a monk for a bit when Panderia came out and enjoyed it. In my personal view, I prefer classes that start from level 1 like the Monk as opposed to Death Knights who start at a higher level. And while I can appreciate branching out once you level up to gain specialization, I like WoW's method of dual classing since you can always play either of your specs – you could even switch specialties on the fly in some similar games. As far as Death Knights, I never gave them a shot, but I'm not sure I would like starting halfway up in levels – I like to run a character from early levels and learn as I go. To be honest, I never even took advantage of the instant 90 that WoW offered – I still have it asking me everytime I log in if I want to boost a character.

I think overall, my favorite class system though is Rift's soul system. Basically all you do is pick an archetype – mage, cleric, warrior, or rogue – and you can take that character in any direction you want. You can earn all the souls (at least you had to earn them when the game came out, I'm not so sure now) and then mix and match those souls to make whatever kind of priest you want. If you want a mage that focuses on melee dps, you can do that. A tanking priest – you can do that. A ranged warrior – no problem. They even have a tanky mage – I gotta go back and try that one out. The other cool part is you could swap them out almost any time. If my dungeon needed a healer – bam I use a Chloromacer. If I want a pet, I throw in necromancer. It's a pretty cool system from my point of view. And actually, I just heard they are adding some new souls and a new class according to the Rift Reforged podcast. Here is the announcement:

Captain Gangplank

My thanks go out to Izlain from Me vs Myself and I who mentioned the free skin that was being offered as part of the Bilgewater event for League of Legends. I don't always read comments in a timely fashion, but I am learning to, and will be making more of an effort. Because I read his comment in time, I was able to get a quick game in as GP and collect the skin. I have to say though, playing my first game as Gangplank against Riven was not fun. I got my sword handed to me – pointy side first.

Scr.ee

What ever happened to Scr.ee? It was a cool website that you could signup your gaming blog on and it would check each post you made for hashtags. It would consolidate all the blogs in its database and list off the trending topics of discussion. I found it a pretty nice place to go to see what was going on in the blogosphere. But it's been broken for at least a month now and that makes me sad. If anyone knows who runs the site or what is up with it, please let me know – I found their service valuable.

It's still not too late to join Blaugust – just go to the initiative page at Tales of the Aggronaut or take a look at the Blaugust Nook on Anook.

    • I was able to touch base with him on Twitter and he gave me a heads up on what was going on. It broke when he updated the PHP version and he’s just been pretty busy – I can relate.
