A Loser and some Winners

Biggest Loser of the Week

Wow. I got a notice the other day that my free subscription to SumAll was going away in 7 days. That is, if I did not upgrade to premium. They were shutting down their free service and we're giving a discount for loyal subscribers to convert to the paid service.

I thought…ok, I can go along at $5 or maybe even $10 a month – I like getting daily emails telling me about what my Twitter reach is and how many retweets I get (if any) – so I head over to their site and log in.

$99 a month!

Wow! I don't think I'm that loyal.

I've enjoyed seeing that my blog post is mentioned on Twitter and that it reaches all of my 80+ followers and that I have a reach of ~700 through all the networked Twitter feeds of my followers and such, but $99?

I suppose SumAll has decided they are not for the small fry any further. Perhaps the Kardassians or Beibers of the world have no issue with a $99/month subscription, but I don't see myself ever having enough concern about Twitter to fork over $1000 a year to a company that tells me how many people read my messages on a free social network.

Sorry, but I don't even pay more than $50 a year for Evernote, and they provide a much more important service to me than SumAll. I wait for sales to buy games I want so I don't have to pay $60…so $99 a month is quite a reach.

SumAll seems to only want dedicated marketers to be using their service, and I hope it works for them. Personally, I can count the number of Twitter users that are within my reach pretty easily so I'm not going to give them $99/month to send me email with the numbers. I'm just sad to see a tool that showed promise jump from free to inaccessible in a matter of days…kinda makes me feel like Google Reader all over again.

But like Google Reader, I'm sure I can find an alternative.

Last Week's Winners

Congrats to the winners last week in the Daytona 500…pretty damn close for such a long race; and the Westminster Dog Show…I actually preferred the Bulldog or the German Shepherd, but the coat on the German Shorthaired Pointer that won was definitely pretty.
