Just Finished Cocaine Blues

Just finished reading Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood and I’d say I enjoyed the novel.  It wasn’t something I would normally read, being a mystery set in 1920s Australia, but the book club thought this would be a good title, and it was.  This is the first in a series of mystery novels staring Phryne Fisher who I liked and thought worked well as a primary character, I could see her carrying many stories, kinda like a young and more adventurous Jessica Fletcher.

After watching TV shows such as Boardwalk Empire, The Knick, and Penny Dreadful, I can see how this time frame would be appealing for a TV series or a set of novels and the thought was justified in this read.  The Australian setting is a bit different though, and I have to admit to knowing little of that country in the 2010s, much less during the early 20th century.  In any case, the story winds through the underbelly of Melbourne dealing with abortionists, rapists, drugs, killers, and commies, but with definite ties to problems in current society.  I’m glad I read the novel, and I might look up the TV series that’s based on the franchise, but I will probably hold off on reading further, not for any reasons other than I prefer SciFi and Fantasy to Mysteries.

Next up is Uprooted by Naomi Novik. She’s always good for a dragon or two.
