Can’t put Uprooted down

Wow…this book has held me spellbound. I ran through 20 chapters since yesterday and I am really enjoying it. I suppose if I could say anything negative, it seems to be slowing down to catch its breath, but so much has gone on I could easily see it as being split into two books about a chapter or so ago.

The first dozen or so chapters set up a really intricate tale and I can feel the emotion of Agnieszka, Kasia, and the Dragon. Sadly, even though I am used to Naomi Novik writing good stories with kick ass dragons in them, this dragon is a man. But the he is a cool wizard and even though he holds himself aloof and is demanding of Agnieszka, he seems to be learning as much from her as she is from him.

I’m usually a fan of fantasy worlds with intricate descriptions of the magic system and this is one of those worlds. I enjoyed David Eddings’ Belgariad with the Will and the Word. I enjoyed the Wheel of Time’s descriptions of saidin and saidar. Here we have a magic system based on magical language, rhythm, and emotion, and it really feels like they are making something magical.

So far, I am loving this book and I don’t see it letting me down for the remaining chapters. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  1. If you like interesting magic systems you should give Brandon Sanderson’s stuff a go too. His “Mistborn” series has 3 different systems all on its own, then Warbreaker, Elantris, and his Stormlight Archive series each have different ones too. They’re all well defined and limited in such a way as to promote character-building. I really like everything he’s done.

    • I’ve been meaning to give Sanderson a try – I’ve actually got Elantris on my reading list. I’ll have to give him a shot – thanks for the recommendation.
