Aywren is another blogger I’ve followed for a while. I enjoy her discussions particularly of Final Fantasy XIV and am glad she participated in Blaugust so I could include her blog in my six degrees post.
End of Blaugust
I wanted to send congratulations to everyone who participated in Blaugust this year. I had fun and am still going through the six degrees of people involved…I figure I’ll keep going till I touch all of them. It’s been a crazy month, but I’m glad to see so many blogs participate. And I liked the relaxed version…not too much pressure on anyone this year…see you all next year.
Stranger Things gets Season 2
I just heard this morning that Stranger Things has been picked up by Netflix for a second season. The Duffer brothers are onboard, but no casting has been announced yet. With the ties to Steven King, John Carpenter, and Steven Spielberg for season 1, it would be kinda cool to see a different trio of story tellers emulated in the next season, though more of the same would be cool too – there are plenty of tales to tell.
Beyond Bossfights – Anxiety
I just listened to the most recent episode of Beyond Bossfights with Braxwolf, and it was really good. They covered Anxiety and gaming and his guests, Andang and Professor Beej, brought some interesting insights into the discussion. One concept that particularly drew my attention was – how do you know you are enjoying a game you are playing if you are yelling and cursing at the computer? When displaying behavior that gives evidence that you don’t like something, how do you claim to be enjoying it? I think this is where I am at with League of Legends. I like the concept of the game, but the reality of it is…the game just makes me frustrated and angry.
Is this really what I want to be doing with me free time?
Do I get relaxation out of this or do I recharge my batteries by playing this game?
I’m thinking the answer is no.
Particularly when I experience a run of matches where people just don’t care about ranked play and have no problem bringing down 4 other teammates with them.
In any case, give the episode a listen, it’s really good.
That’s my recent record in League of Legends and it’s pretty pathetic. Every once in a while I’ve noticed Riot decides to set me up with some really bad teams and I get in ruts like this. A breakdown of the 12 games can be enlightening…
- Game 1: LOSS – I played a Nami support to a first time Vayne who achieved 53 CS by 13 minutes.
- Game 2: LOSS – after a remake where my ADC didn’t show up, I got a Teemo who never left the top lane to participate with the team – he did get the outer turret down before we lost.
- Game 3: LOSS – jungle Jax had no games played as the champ and went 2–13 dying each time he tried to gank bot lane.
- Game 4: WIN – actually won this thanks to a beast mode Nasus who overcame our ADC Vayne who excitedly exclaimed that he was high and was playing on his buddy’s account.
- Game 5: LOSS – had an Ahri who told us not to worry that she was going AD in the bot lane as ADC – she went 2–9
- Game 6: LOSS – my ADC, Ezreal, didn’t know how to avoid getting grabbed by Blitz and went 0–6 before minute 10.
- Game 7: WIN – went 5/1/15 to carry bot lane when playing with a virgin Ashe
- Game 8: LOSS – Yasuo went AFK at 5 minutes after getting ganked.
- Game 9: LOSS – Teemo ADC…nuff said.
- Game 10: LOSS – rookie Vayne who got 67 CS and went 0–3 by 12 minutes – proudly exclaimed he was on a boosted account.
- Game 11: LOSS – Alistar virgin jungler went 2–10.
- Game 12: LOSS – no tanks, a virgin Nidalee jungler, and a first time Diana midlane.
It’s runs like this that really have me wondering why I should keep playing this game. When nearly every game has at least 1 player out of 5 that directly contribute to a loss in ranked due to inexperience, drugs, ignorance of the meta, AFK, or choices to actively help the enemy team, it really gets frustrating. As I’ve already pointed out, I’ve had 2 reports result in the culprits being banned during this set of games but that hasn’t altered the fact that I fell from Silver I to Silver III.
Oh well, with Legion coming out today, I think I’ll take a leave of absence from League. We’ll see how long and if I decide to punish myself further by trying to deal with a game where 1 outta 5 people are more than happy to goof around in ranked.
Too much busy-ness today that I’ve barely had a moment to catch my breath. I did hear a few things that I want to comment on though, and although they may not be related to gaming…whatever, the next few weeks are gonna be dominated by Legion anyway.
This actor was great, and it’s sad to hear that he has passed on. For so many years he entertained me with wonderful movies like the real Willy Wonka, Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, See No Evil Hear No Evil, and so many more. He was a true comedic genius and I will always enjoy his movies. That’s one of the great things about actors, you can always go back to their movies to see them in their prime.
San Francisco’s Dumb Quarterback
I’m appalled at the stupid QB sitting on the bench in San Fran. Sure, he has a right to protest and say whatever idiocy he wants, but it’s my right to call him an idiot for it. 66 million and he feels oppressed – why doesn’t he act like a rational person and use his millions to support those who are really oppressed. No…I guess he’d rather take his dough and spit on the great soldiers who’ve given their lives for this nation.
Legion is Almost Here
After playing a bunch of pre-Legion invasion sessions this weekend, I am truly excited to see what Legion has in store for us. I didn’t make it to level 100, but I’m closer than I was a week ago and I saved up a bunch of those goodie boxes to open when I do get up a couple more levels. Tomorrow is the day and I while I don’t have any time off as vacation, I do have Monday off as a regular work holiday.
This weekend I jumped into the Legion Invasions with my main character. I had pretty much put my Druid on the shelf for Warlords as she is only level 91 so it was nice to dust her off. But to tell you the truth, the whole invasion thing seems pretty chaotic for someone who hasn’t raided in any real sense since Cata. Everyone running around trying to tap as many demons as possible was interesting, but for the most part, when I died, I was pretty clueless as to what killed me. I mean, in the one invasion with the big green balls, it was kinda apparent what rolled over me, but the others were pretty random.
Perhaps as I play WoW some more, I’ll get used to things and become more familiar with how things happen again.
In any case, I saw something I found interesting.
There was a giant craft hanging out by the invasions. Now, I didn’t run through any of the pre-Legion quests yet, so it might be mentioned in those, but I thought it was pretty cool when I discovered it for myself.
This past week, for episode 1 of my new 6° 2.0, I took a look at:
- Tales of the Aggronaut – First Degree
- Aeternus Gaming – Second Degree
- A Green Mushroom – Third Degree
- Ancient Mana – Fourth Degree
- A Technical Rejoinder – Fifth Degree
- Contains Moderate Peril –Sixth Degree
There was quite a bit of discussion about the Legion Invasions and preparation for the new Warcraft expansion, there was some fiction, a movie review, and of course, No Man’s Sky was covered. It was a nice diverse set of posts and I think it represents the broad spectrum of interests people involved in Blaugust have.
This week since it’s still Blaugust, for the first half of the week at least, I’ll look again at blogs participating in that event.
Here’s who I’m planning on visiting in episode 2:
Some of these I’ve visited before, but a few are new to me and I’m excited to check them all out this week.
The final entry in the first episode of my new 6° 2.0 goes to Contains Moderate Peril and Roger posts about the movie Edge of Tomorrow.
This post about a Tom Cruise movie from 2014 is pretty close to how I feel about this film. I actually think it’s one of Cruise’s better science fiction performances. While I liked Minority Report and its Philip K. Dick influences, similar to Roger, I think this war zone Groundhog Day was really good.
The post covers details of the movie I didn’t remember and Roger has much more information about the film than I ever researched, which is pretty cool to see. I enjoy the posts he puts together on movies since I don’t take the time he does to find out about the directors and writers and often these details.
Actually, I almost wrote this post about Death Wish 3 with Charles Bronson, but it took to long for me to get around to commenting. That’s the other part I like about these posts on Contains Moderate Peril – they provide interesting tidbits of information about movies I’ve never heard of or those I want to see.
Keep up the good work Roger!
As I said, things seem pretty toxic in League these days, I’m just surprised to see Riot take action 2 days in a row.
Thanks to Izlain
I wanted to mention my thanks to Izlain of Me Vs. Myself and I for recommending that I watch the VODs of the Immortals vs Cloud 9 LCS matches. Those were 5 of the best League matches I’ve ever seen. So incredible! If you haven’t seen them and have any interest in League of Legends or ESports, I add my recommendation to Izlain’s – these are good viewing.
Work has been crazy lately so I’ve been focusing more on that not only during work hours, but also at home when I should be having downtime. Things are just easier to research when I’m not running into firewall blocks of developer blogs like I get at the office. So, what time I have been using to wind down, I’ve spent watching some of my favorite shows.
Mr. Robot is of course awesome! It’s not often a show puts out an episode without it’s Emmy nominated stars and it’s just as good as the other episodes. After the revelations of last week I kinda expected more of a slow episode this week, but not with this show. If anything, things got more intense for the members of the cast NOT in jail. They’ve taken things a beyond hacking and they’re starting to recognize that the Dark Army might have agendas they are keeping secret from FSociety. Such a good show that is consistent every week.
Halt and Catch Fire
Halt and Catch Fire came back this week and it picked up with the Mutiny team in San Francisco. They put out a 2 episode first week and I’m pretty sure the only thing we see of Joe is his voice in the first episode. He plays a larger role in the second episode, even offering Gordon a 70% share of his company to join forces with him. Of course Gordon turns him down, so Joe steals the brightest developer on Mutiny away to piss Gordon off even more. It looks like this will be the theme of the season. Mutiny is trying to expand from a chat room BBS to something that will allow financial transactions, but they’re ignoring security implications pointed out by the smart guy. Joe on the other hand is growing his antivirus empire. So glad to have this show back for another season.
It’s pretty strange going from a hacker show set in 2015/16 to an infant computer industry show set in the 1980s. Security just wasn’t a concern back then…now, it’s paramount, but there are failures all over the place all the time. But then it’s probably the first time there have been multiple shows on the air that focus so heavily on the computer industry and tech. I love both of them.
The first episode of my new 6° continues with the 5th degree, and this is a new and different one for me. SQWarlock has put together a bit of fiction over at A Technical Rejoinder.
This post puts forth an interesting piece of fiction that I’d like to read more of. I think there is a good hook that provides interest. It makes you wonder about Talia and who her mother is/was, and what the dryads have done in this world to brand them monsters that require slaying just for being discovered.
I look forward to seeing where this story goes and hope SQWarlock keeps up the posts.
