Real life threw obstacles in my path today

Today was an interesting day.  I had already planned to go to the dentist today, but that turned out to be the least of my issues today.  After getting in to work and getting a few things done, I got a call that my prescription was ready at the pharmacist, so I had to add that to my to- do list. So now I had the pharmacy pick up and the dentist to deal with along with finishing up a project at work.

Testing

The work project went pretty well and I got things moving along efficiently, but for some reason, the item counters were not incrementing the way I had programmed the database to process them – something was off.  Turns out that I placed the incrementation on the wrong side of the database retrieval – I was incrementing then pulling the data from the database rather than the other way around.  Fortunately, I was able to figure this out quickly through testing so I was able to go pick up my prescription at lunch.

Out for Lunch

The trip to the pharmacy went well – they had all the meds I came to pick up even though I had to wait while to fill one of the prescriptions.  The lines weren’t bad and I had found a decent parking space so I was actually feeling fine about waiting a few minutes. Usually, I have to hunt for a parking spot or drive around to the structure on the other side of the hospital – today, I just happened to arrive as someone was leaving…not to bad.

The problem happened as I was trying to leave the parking lot.  As I turned the key in the ignition, my car “tried” to turn over then crapped out.  After I few more tried with diminishing effect, I realized the battery was dead…time to call triple A.

The call to AAA went well and after passing on my membership number and where I was, they said they’d have someone on their way soon.  30 seconds after I hung up, a battery repairman called saying he was around the corner.  Wow!  This was the fastest turnaround I’ve ever had for car service.  5 minutes later and Ray had my car running again and told me not to turn it off because the battery was dead.  I now had to add car service to my to-do list.

Car Service

Knowing the battery was dead, I figured it was time to take the car in for it’s 50k tune up which was due 2 weeks ago.  Quickly calling the dealer on the way, I set up an appointment and a rental so I could get to the dentist.  I explained everything to the mechanics when I got there and then had to wait 10 minutes while they brought my rental Prius from the “back 40” – good thing I called ahead, it might have taken 15 minutes if I showed up unannounced.

Onward to the Dentist

The rest was pretty boring. I raced from the dealership back to work for a few minutes to grab my stuff and put the finishing touches on my work for the day then I headed to the dentist. I usually don’t have issues with the dentist and I had no reason to today. 30 minutes later and I was done with everything. Even have nice shiny teeth.

Anyway, I had a bunch of plans for a post today but with everything that happened, I figured real life threw enough obstacles at me and I feel like I achieved a bunch – I should have received a trophy today.
