Morning Ramble 347: Finally Read Dune

Dune

I finally read all the way through Dune and it was definitely worth the time.

I don’t know what really held me back all these years but I do admit the book is complex with lots of stuff going on in different areas – politics, religion, gender, races – it’s got it all. And because there so much going on, I’m not sure if having seen the movie is a benefit or a hinderance since I basically knew the plot going in. Anyway, I loved it. The book went further into things than the movie ever could have and I now have a much better understanding of that universe, so much so, I can see how they were able to make so many novels together in that world.

Now that I’ve read through the book, I’m ready to go through some in depth analysis. Tor.com has a nice reread that I’ve wanted to go through a they always have some really good guides to classic tales. It they contain spoilers so it’s better to read through at least once before following along with them. Someday I want to take a look at the Wheel of Time reread but that’s a pretty large investment. The Nerdist also has a readthrough of Dune that could be an interesting read – I’ll take a look at that as I go through the Tor reread. Finally, there’s a good series over at Mythgard Institute.

So with all the cool resources, I think I might just read through the book again following along. For now though, I give the book an A- and really enjoyed it.

The Day I Died

I tried to read this mystery novel, I really did, but it was just not my cup of tea. The story started out well enough but I just couldn’t stick with it. Another time maybe, but for now, I put it aside.
