American Gods: Episode 1 – The Bone Orchard – Bilquis

This next scene is a bit R rated so won’t contain too many images but here’s the story so far…Shadow Moon is released from prison early to attend his wife’s funeral. He hops on a plane and gets bumped to first class where he meets Mr. Wednesday who seems to know quite a bit about him. Wednesday offers Shadow a job which he declines and they both fall asleep. Shadow awakens in middle America somewhere, because the plane had to land for the weather, and he starts driving the rest of the way to the funeral. Stopping at a national park Shadow gets out and screams at the sky raging at the frustrations, loss, sense of injustice, and anger that he’s been forced to endure so far in the first 30 minutes of the series…

We then transition to Hollywood where we meet Bilquis played by Yetide Badaki.

She’s got an online date set up and meets the guy in a bar. They hit it off and head back to her place where she’s got a bed surrounded by candles and idols.

They get intimate and the scene ends with him professing his devotion to her, worshiping her, and offering his life and body to her. She proceeds to consume him with her nether region and in the process becomes more vibrant and youthful looking.

Jump to the Crocodile bar.

In the middle of nowhere, Shadow stumbles upon the Crocodile bar where Mr. Wednesday just happens to be. And while Shadow again refuses Wednesday’s job offer, he does accept the newspaper with Shadow’s wife’s obituary in it. Turns out his best friend Robbie also died in the car accident that took his wife’s life…Robbie was going to set up a job for Shadow when he got back to town – guess that’s not gonna happen.

So without job prospects, a dead wife, and no money, Shadow offers to flip a coin to see if he’ll work for Wednesday (he calls tails) – being a conman though, Shadow rigs it so he’s gonna win and not take the offered job. It turns out Mr. Wednesday is a better con than Shadow though.

Next time we’ll meet Mad Sweeney and we learn the conditions of Shadow’s employment.

What I learned:

  • Bilquis must be one of the gods seeing as she ingested her date and seemed replenished from it.
  • Shadow’s wife, Laura, was a bank employee.
  • Robert Burton, Robbie to Shadow, owned the Muscle Farm in Eagle Point.
  • Shadow doesn’t want to work for anyone who has less luck than he does – and he’s had some bad luck lately.
  • Shadow doesn’t want to work for Mr. Wednesday but lost the coin flip.

  1. I binged the whole show and I must say it was weird, but very good. If you like this sort of thing, I’d recommend Legion if you didn’t already watch it.

I can’t imagine how horrifying it would be to be lured into a sexual situation with a woman just to be eaten by a vagina. My girlfriend and I were laughing about that for days afterwards.

    • Yeah – that was a pretty crazy situation. I was expecting the scene since I’ve read the book and I think they did a pretty good job of conveying the concepts from the book.
As for Legion, I’ve seen everything but the last 2 episodes – I’ve enjoyed it but got to busy. Thanks for reminding me that I’ve got to finish it off.
