Characters:

The Good: Miss America
The Bad: Loki
The Undecided: Wiccan (Billy Kaplan)

My Reading:

This short story begins with Miss America being invited to lunch with Loki, but this isn’t the Loki I’ve known from the movies, this one, at least in appearance seems to be pretty young. He does like Korean food though and they meet at Koreatown VIII in New York. Loki wants her to head back to “Earth-Earth” but she doesn’t seem to like that place too much.

Trying to convince her to come with him, Loki shows her a vision of Billy Kaplan who calls himself Wiccan and is the son of the Scarlet Witch. The trickster god suggests that the universe might be better off without Kaplan in it and Miss America has had enough. She grabs Loki and slams him into the food and then hurls him through the wall. Outside she says she’ll be keeping an eye on Loki and on Wiccan and then flies off into the sky. As she flies off into the distance, Loki marks on his checklist…

What did I learn:

  • I thought Scarlett Witch was married to Vision but I suppose that did not result in this Billy Kaplan so I’m not sure what the status of things are in this Marvel Now world.
  • If Loki wants Miss America to go back to “Earth-Earth” then she must be hanging out somewhere else that’s a lot like that place.
  • I’m not sure but this might be the first I’ve seen of the multiverse in Marvel.

My Thoughts:

This is my first exposure to Miss America and apparently I’ve got a bunch to learn. Loki seems to be trying to get a group of youngsters together to do something and it’s not really clear what. He appears to be trying to take down this Wiccan guy though I’m not sure what he’s done. It could just be that Loki wants to create mischief. Anyway, Miss America doesn’t want to have anything to do with Loki since it seems she’s dealt with him in the past – I don’t blame her, he’s not to be trusted…at least the versions of him I’ve seen before.

My Rating: B-

  1. Oh man, the ever-increasing complexity of Vison and Scarlet Witch’s kids.

    Short version:

Scarlet Witch and Vision were once married until the Vision was completely taken apart and put back together, apparently rendering him emotionless. Their marriage ended shortly afterwards.

While they were married they had twin boys named Tommy and Billy. But! The children weren’t real, they were actually subconsciously created by the Scarlet Witch using her reality warping powers. Ultimately they ceased to exist. Those children had real souls however. Those souls were reincarnated as Billy Kaplan who has chaos magic powers like his sort of mom and Tommy Shepherd who has super-speed like his sort of uncle.

Also a dude named Master Pandemonium who has demons for hands was involved.

The Young Avengers book by Gillen that these one-shots led into is really fantastic by the way. Highly recommend.

    • Thanks for the info – there’s so much continuity I know so little about. I’ve read some of the latest Vision series written by Tom King but he’s got a different and android wife in that and I’ve never read any Scarlett Witch though I’ve heard that their wedding was a pretty big deal.

As far as the Young Avengers, I’ve been a fan of Gillen’s work for a while so I thought I’d give it a try down the road.
