Comics of 2017

Daily Ramble 116: Comics of 2017

I clearly read more comics this year than dureing any year in the past and I actullay tried to keep track of things before I started something for a change. I actually copied the template I had for book reading and adjusted a few things and it worked really well for comics. With that said, here are some of the over all results of my reading from 2017.

Publisher

Marvel was the publisher I read the most of in 2017 but between them and DC, they covered 69% of all the issues I read.

I can see that with the Marvel Unlimited subscription, I spent more time going through these comics but I also purchased my fair share of Marvel books as well. I’d like to pay a bit more attention to this distribution in 2018 so I can read more comics that don’t come from the big 2.

Digital is King

And mentioning Marvel Unlimited in the publisher section, I have to say I went completely digital this year. Everything was on either Marvel Unlimited of ComiXology, but the two free unlimited services certainly paid for themselves.

Genre

While I think I’ll stick to the digital comics for the most part going forward, I do want to expand the genre of comics I’ve been reading. In 2017, most comics I read were of the Superhero type. This makes sense since I read so many events from the big 2 and I was exploring the start of Silver Age Marvel, but I’d like to open things up a bit more in 2018.

I’d also like to read more issues with female writers and lead characters since I seem to have missed the opportunity to read many this past year.

Monthly Look

Finally, looking at my monthly breakdowns, I can clearly see that I picked up speed during the last half of the year. I think that’s when I started to focus on a couple of my projects -> Modern Marvel and DC Rebirth.

As I move forward I also see that many of the books I read actually are more modern, with almost 200 of the comics I read published after 2010. Sure, an almost 50% split is good but there are so many comics that were written prior to 2010 that I’ve barely touched the surface on them. I’m gonna try to read more older issues in the coming year.

Overall

On the whole, I feel pretty good about the nearly 350 books I read in 2017. I had only set my goal at 250 and obviously flew right past that. While I’m looking at the numbers here, I think I’ll put another post together next week that looks at the stories I read in those 350 issues.
