Football Champs, Toads, and Dodos

Daily Ramble 125: Football Champs, Toads, and Dodos

Not much of a preamble today except to reiterate my congratulations to Alabama for winning the NCAA Football Championship and to Georgia for a valiant fight. I also ramble on about quests in FFXIV.

Champions Again

Congratulations to the Alabama Crimson Tide for once again fighting their way to become the NCAA Football Champions. I was pulling for the Georgia Bulldogs who put together a strong case for their appearance in the championship game but who just fell a bit short.

It was a really good game and I have to say I’m not too sure about the college football overtime system – it just seems so different than what the teams have been doing for 60 minutes. Sure, the offense and defense are highlighted but what about the special teams? There’s no chance for a spectacular kickoff return or blocked punt in overtime so I’m not a fan.

In any case, the Bulldogs dominated the first half and the Tide took over in the second, and obviously the quarterback swap that Alabama made was the correct decision. I just wish the announcers knew something about the players beyond the fact that so many were freshmen – that was just so annoying. Mrs. Redshirt even wondered why ESPN didn’t have their best announcers for the championship game. I wondered why the refs kept making bad calls and were they paid off.

In all though, it was a fun game to watch – much better than the politics laden NFL which I refuse to turn on until they focus on the game instead of how much they don’t like the President.

Once again Alabama deserves to be called Champions.

Swing of Things

I think I’m starting to get into the swing of things in Final Fantasy XIV. I’ve figured out the layout of the current questing for the most part. Run around in the city to pick up a new quest then head out to the islands to fight off some dastardly Dodo birds…

Or some evil toads…

And then run back into the city to turn in the quest and get the next one.

So far things are going smoothly and even though I don’t have a lot of time in game, I feel like I’m getting things done. I’m still at level 7 but I’m close to leveling up and I think I’ll be at 10 soon enough. One thing I’ve gotta figure out though is the what is Aether and how do I use it. I got a spell called Aetherflow at level 6 and another one called Energy Drain and while Aetherflow says it’ll restore MP, I have no idea Energy Drain does or how to actually cast it. There’s so much info in this game that they abbreviate a lot of it so it makes no sense to newbies like myself. Somehow, my spells cause “unaspected” damage. I have no idea what that means, but my base spell – Ruin – causes “unaspected” damage with a “potency” of 100 – huh? I have no idea what these mean, but so far I suppose it doesn’t matter, I just know the spell does damage. At some point I’ll have to figure out what all the abbreviations and coded language means, but for now I’m just happy to point, shoot, and kill things.
