Reading Comics week 46 of 2018

Last week I decided I would take a look at the issues I read the previous week so that I could point out highlights of what I liked. This week I decided to try expanding my reading list to include current releases that are getting a high ratings. I figure these must be good comics and I’d like to see what’s out there beyond Marvel, DC, and my book club. This could also give me some titles to recommend to my book club for future months. In any case, these issues were all pretty good.

  • Y: The Last Man #16 and #17, by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra. Published by Vertigo in 2003. – This finishes off the 3rd volume of the title and these 2 issues focus on a side quest in which Apersand breaks away from the team and joins up with a travelling troupe of actors. How do people waiting for the end of the human race entertain themselves?
  • The Activity #4 and #5, by Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads. Published by Image Comics 2012. – These issues conclude the first volume of The Activity and continue the somewhat disjointed missions of the Intelligence Support Activity. We see the team go after a drug lord in issue 4 and then take on a job in Taiwan that goes south fast as Team Omaha gets captured in issue 5.
  • Star Wars: Darth Vader #16, Burning Seas, Part IV by Charles Soule and Giuseppe Camuncoli. Published by Marvel Comics 2018.- Vader continues his assault on Mon Cala with his team of Inquisitors heading into the oceans to track down the elusive Jedi, Master Barr. Things don’t look good for the survivor of Order 66.
  • Bitter Root #1 by Chuck Brown, David F. Walker, and Sanford Greene. Published by Image Comics, 2018. – Monsters running rampant in 1924 Harlem provides the backdrop for this tale that tackles racism, gender roles, and family. This was not a title I would have picked up had I not seen that it was highly rated but I’m certainly glad that I grabbed it.
  • Domino #1, Bad Luck and Trouble, Part 1 by Gail Simone and David Baldeon. Published by Marvel Comics 2018. – This is my first experience reading anything about Domino though I’m pretty sure she’s been around the Marvel Universe for a while (apparently her first appearance was back in 1992 in X-Force #8), and she seems like a fun character. Her power seems to center around “Good Luck” and whenever she is threatened with death somehow something happens that saves her. The problem in this arc seems to be that someone has figured out how to stop her power from working and then they throw her out a window.
  • Firefly #1, by Greg Pak and Dan McDaid. Published by BOOM! Studios, 2018. – I admit that I loved Firefly when it was on TV and I enjoyed the movie as well. Joss Whedon created a great universe to tell stories in and I’ve been hoping to get those tales in any form possible. This comic fills that desire and I can’t wait for the next issue. If you’re a fan of Firefly,
Westerns, Science Fiction, or just looking for a cool story with interesting characters, this book is for you.
  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #32 by Ryan North, Derek Charm, and Rico Renzi. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018. – Squirrel Girl and her team invite Kraven the Hunter to spend some quality time with them in an escape room. You can’t tell me that doesn’t sound interesting.

If you have read these, let me know what you though and if you have any suggestions I’d gladly accept recommendations for good reads.
