A Quick Look at Comics Week 49 of 2018

Taking a quick look at the comics I went through this last week sees the Hulk, Shazam, a D&D-like story, and Merlin the Magician. Quite a variety of superhero, fantasy, sci-fi, and horror all topped off with the lovable pooch, Lockjaw.

From Marvel Unlimited New Releases:

  • Immortal Hulk #1 by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett. Published by Marvel Comics 2018 – this issue was a throwback to the original stories of the Hulk where he was more monster than hero.  He’s still out for justice but he’s not pulling his punches.
  • Lockjaw #2 by  Daniel Kibblesmith and Carlos Villa. Published by Marvel Comics 2018 – D-Man and Lockjaw continue their journey from the first issue and this time they’re in the Savage Land where they learn that the flying hamsters have made an appearance as well.

From Comixology:

  • Die #1 by Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans.  Published by Image Comics, 2018. This issue is a cool combo between Stranger Things and the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons cartoon.  It’s also got a cool mystery that gets laid out in this first issue.
  • Shazam! #1 by Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham.  Published by DC Comics, 2018. This title isn’t just about the Shazam character but his whole family of super-powered heroes.
  • Prodigy #1 by Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque.  Published by Image Comics, 2018 – Edison Crane seems like a current day Buckaroo Bansai as he solves rocketry problems, jumps over the grand canyon on a motorcycle, and wins the world chess championship, but the invasion coming from a parallel universe may be the trickiest problem he’s had to tackle in a long time.
  • Border Town #1 by Eric M Esquivel and Ramon Villalobos.  Published by Vertigo Comics, 2018 – Devil’s Fork Arizona is populated by Hispanics, white supremacists, illegal immigrants, and monsters but what sets it apart is the portal that sits on the border between the United States, Mexico, and the Aztec underworld of Mictlan.

From Marvel Unlimited 1963:

  • Journey Into Mystery #96 by Stan Lee and Joe Sinnott.  Published by Marvel Comics 1963 – Thor takes on Merlin in this one, but more importantly, Merlin may actually be the first mutant.
