Marvelous Year and Lowbie Gaming

My Marvelous Year

With the beginning of the year…I know it’s 3 weeks in already but I’m really just getting into the swing of things…Comic Book Herald has started up their My Marvelous Year Reading group and I’m all in.

The whole idea of the group is to go through each year of Marvel Comics from 1961 to the present and read through some of the most influential, important, and exciting issues Marvel has put out since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby joined forces to create the Fantastic Four. There’s certainly a lot of comics to choose from but the group is keeping things relatively reasonable by focusing on the 10 issues or storylines that dominate the year and while we might be looking at 10 issues during the early years, later on there are some huge story arcs that can result in tons of reading. Regardless, I’m up for the challenge.

With that said, I dove back into Fantastic Four #1 and even after all the comics I’ve read since the last time I read about how Reed and Sue talked their compatriots into stealing a rocket and flying to outer space to beat the Commies, I still find this a great issue. Sure, these days we fly with Russian Cosmonauts on a regular basis and the biggest fear is that a hotel deal that fell through in Moscow shows how much the President colluded with the ex-Soviet Union, but even though we’re on a different round of “Red Scare” this issue works for me. And it’s always a nice grounding point to come back to so I can remember where modern comics all began.

Current Gaming

But I’m not only reading comics these days, as you would suspect from my distribution of posts recently. I’m also gaming.

While I haven’t put together many thoughts on my experiences, I’ve been running around in LOTRO and The Elder Scrolls Online quite a bit lately.

The legendary servers in LOTRO are a lot of fun and it’s exciting to see all the people still playing on both Anor and Ithil. And though I’ve only reached level 15 on both my characters this is close to the furthest I’ve gone in the game. Sure, things may be a bit dated and quests are focused on making you run all over the zone as you grind, but I’m enjoying myself. I’m not sure when the next update is coming out but I’m hoping to keep pushing my Warden and Minstrel to their limits so I can jump into Moria when it comes out.

On the Elder Scrolls front, I’m having a great time on my Warden and am looking to add another character to my stable to spread out my experience. Once I get up to level 15 I figure I should have a decent idea of where I’m going with things and I can branch out. Actually I’ve seen a Bow build that I might like to try out on the PS4. I’ve got a buddy who plays tanky on the console so I figure something focused on ranged damage might be a lot of fun over there. Regardless of if I start up another character on PC or console, I’ve seen quite a few people in game these days and I’m pleased. I’m not sure if people are getting ready for the announced Elsweyr expansion that’ll be coming out in a few months or if they’re just having fun in the game but I like being surrounded by other lowbies even if I’m not grouping with them a lot.
