Captain America Becomes an Avenger

First Look Review of Avengers #4

Captain America Joins…the Avengers! By Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964.
This issue of the Avengers has it all…superheroes, aliens, Prince Namor, and it even features the reappearance of one of the main Golden Age heroes of Marvel Comics…Captain America.

Yup, it took 4 issues but Cap is finally joining in on the Avengers team and this issue gives him quite a bit of face time.

We see not only the tale of how he came to be in 1964.

But also he takes center stage as every Avenger is turned to stone except him.

With the entire team making like statues Cap must hunt down the “photographer” that stoned them who turns out to be an alien. He’s also kinda working with Namor. Fortunately Steve is able to convince the alien to revert the team and they in turn help rescue the alien’s ship but while doing so, Namor attacks.

We see quite a few good fights and while Namor tries to take on each Avenger individually and does a pretty good job, the alien’s spaceship puts an end to the battle as it heads out to space and each of the combatants head home.

With his battle prowess proven and an opening in the team since Hulk took off, the Avengers offer Cap a spot on the team…little do they know he’ll soon be the leader.
While this is only the second Avengers comic I’ve read from the 60s, I really enjoyed it. The lettering bubbles were nicely colored to distinguish who was talking and I really liked that touch. The story was well done and I liked how each hero had time to show their stuff. I think things are starting to come together with this team of creators just as the Avengers are coming together.

With Cap now onboard, I give this issue a A- and look forward to seeing what the new team can do.

This comic can be found on Marvel Unlimited, Comixology or at your local comic book shop.
