The Fixer Takes A Dive

First Look Review of Daredevil #1

The Origin of Daredevil by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. Published by Marvel Comics, 1964.

In this issue we see how little Matthew Murdock, son of Battling Murdock, becomes a powerful hero even though his father pushes him to stay in school and be a good student.

It’s pretty clear that little Matt was gonna follow in his father’s steps and become a powerful fighter but it turned out he was not destined for the ring. Rather he became a vigilante when the Fixer and his gang of thugs demanded that his father throw a fight. Battling Murdock was not gonna take a fall in front of his son but when he won the fight, the Fixer and his buddy Slade made sure he took one final dive caused by a bullet.

So we see some really nice fight scenes in this issue but we also get the origin of Daredevil as he is blinded by a radioactive chemical while saving an old blind man from being run over. With his sight taken away, his other senses are enhanced to the extent he even develops a kind of radar that lets him behave as though he’s not blind at all.

In any case we see Matt not only become daredevil but also a lawyer and from my knowledge of the character both play a large role in who Murdock is for the next 50+ years.

I give this issue a A- and look forward to seeing more of what Daredevil brings to the streets of New York.
