Talking About a Gem

A Comic and an Episode With Lots of Talking

Looking at Immortal Hulk #3 and Game of Thrones episode 2 is an exercise in attending to people talking. Both the comic and the show had quite a bit of chatter and little in the way of action. But I enjoyed them both.

Game of Talking

This most recent episode of Game of Thrones was ok…I’m certainly glad I watched it, but it was one of those typical episodes where nothing really happens.

It seems every season in even the best series has a slow show that kinda gives everyone a breather. It’s usually not the 2nd episode of the season but I think or at least I hope this week’s episode was the one and only one for season 8.

We got to see Tyrion talk to Jamie, Jamie talk to Brienne, Brienne talk to Tormund, and on and on. It was fun seeing everyone come together in Winterfell to chat about how they all get along fine together now, but I want to see fighting. I suppose I’ll get that next week but I wish the writers spread out the talking among a number of episodes rather than dump it all in 60 minutes.

I’m sure that when the season is over we’ll all look back at episode 2 and talk about how great it was to see all the characters having a good time chatting, but I would have preferred some action mixed in with the dialog.

A Journalist’s Notes

Immortal Hulk #3, Point of View by Al Ewing and Joe Bennet (and a bunch of other artists). Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.

Following up on the last issue Point of View sees another gamma ray empowered character show up in small town America. This time, Hotshot isn’t really out to hurt anyone, rather he’s broken into a church to get the priest to say the Last Rites for his girlfriend. None-the-less, things don’t go well considering he took hostages and started shooting up the place.
The cool aspect of this issue though is the actual “point of view” feature. Each of the various characters get their own art style, dialog, and perspectives and it’s really a unique comic.
I’d definitely recommend this as a Must Read and I’m looking forward to seeing what other interesting innovations this creative team brings to future issues.

It’s a Wrap

While both media contain a bunch of talking and little action I think I preferred that in the comic more than the TV show. While both are a visual medium I think the artistic manner in which Immortal Hulk #3 handled the various interviews was creative and fairly unique while the TV show just kinda threw a bunch of dialog scenes together.

Both advanced their stories and if nothing else, made me more likely to anticipate the next installment so I think they both worked.
