I Wish Ranked Systems were Developed by Developers too

Another day focused on relaxing since this promises to be another busy week at work. I didn’t take a look at any developers for Developer Appreciation Week for Blaugust but I suppose I will appreciate the programmers of games rather than the political hacks that run the ranked system of those games. I’m thinking specially about Riot Games.

In an attempt at having some fun I played a bit of League of Legends and quickly realized why I shouldn’t use that game to relax. The game works pretty well from a programming point of view and I appreciate all the various champions they’ve come out with over the years. But I can not believe the same people who built the game are the ones responsible for the matchmaking, the ranking system, or the weekly balance tweaks.

The ranking system in particular is my beef today. I’ve been playing multiple games where I rate as one of the top 2 players in the match and I’ve been consistently scoring at S and S+ levels. But it gets really frustrating when I lose those games because of an AFK or feeder. Then to top it off I lose the same amount of LP as that AFK player or feeder. How can rankings be legit if I lose the same amount of points when I lose a 4v5 game as when I lose a game with 5 players on the team…or even lose a 5v4 (it’s happened).

To me these types of flaws in the system make this game a failure and one that constantly frustrates me whenever I get into playing it. Sure, I come back at least once very 6 months or so, so the concept of the game is sound and the baseline game was developed well but the matchmaking and ranking system has serious problems.

In any case, while I appreciate the developers, I hate the current systems of gameplay so much I am leaving the game again. This time, I think I’ll give DOTA 2 a try.

Oh well, a bit of a rant on appreciation day and on the 18th of Blaugust.
