Five plus One

Ramble #11: Five plus One

I’ve been reading through my fellow blogger’s posts recently and have noticed that a bunch have been discussing what they’re calling the Five Games for a Year Challenge (The Gaming Diaries, Endgame Viable, Time to Loot, Princess in a Castle, Contains Moderate Peril). The idea is to pick five games and only play those game for the next year…kinda like you were on a desert island and had no opportunity to purchase or install other games. It’s an interesting idea and while I’m hesitant to lock myself in for a full year I am looking at a strategy I’ve used in my work life…the 12 week year. The idea with this is that instead of having 12 months in a year, you treat each week as a month and work towards accomplishing everything you would normally achieve in a year…in 12 weeks.

With that in mind, I’m looking at the next 12 weeks and thinking about what games I’d like to limit myself to over that timespan. Unfortunately, I just purchased Moons of Madness from Funcom this week and just installed it this morning. I’m not willing to drop a brand new game into my 5 game challenge so I’m gonna modify things a bit, not only to focus on 12 weeks instead of 12 months, but I’m also looking at 5+1 games – five games I know that I’m interested in trying to stick with for the whole time period and an extra that I want to include because I just bought it.

Here are games I’m gonna try to stick with for the next 12 weeks:

  • Secret World Legends
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Star Wars the Old Republic
  • The Witcher 3
  • Civilization VI
  • Moons of Madness

We’ll see how things go since I’m gonna start gaming under this plan on Sunday.

  1. Interesting! I think you and I might be the only ones actually attempting to stick to the list for any period of time, but I like the challenge level you’ve set for yourself of 12 weeks.

I’ve currently committed myself to just one month. With an intent to possibly trick myself into a second month when the first proves to be easy. (Fingers crossed that that is the case!) A third? Possibly! Maybe up until a year.

To be clear, I still don’t think even with this series of mini-goals I’ll actually get to a full year. But I guess we’ll see.

If I was to follow you into the +1 part… Hmmm. Not sure what I might pick here. Avorion possibly? Not a new title, but new to me. If it was talking in the context of a whole year — then I’d probably say Cyberpunk 2077 and then wait out its release.
