Hold Your Breath In Space

Invincible #5

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker
Colorist: Bill Crabtree
Published by Image Comics, 2003.

The previous issue of Invicible finished off the initial story arc – Family Matters – where we were first introduced to our hero. He’s a typical high schooler who just happens to discover that he has super powers. Sure, his dad has powers and is actually the Defender of Earth, but he wasn’t sure he’d be anything more than a regular guy.

That story saw Mark join up with a group of fellow teens (and a robot) to take down one of their teachers who was using students as bombs. It was illuminating to see that not only was Mark a super powered teen but he also had friends at school who were as well.

In this issue we see Invincible on a mission for his father. While his dad has important business to attend to, he asks Mark to confront an imminent threat to the planet. And it turns out he does a better job than his dad has done for the past 15 years.

I really enjoyed this issue as it shows that while there are gonna be action packed fights in the series, there is also thoughtful resolutions to dangerous situations. We also get a glimpse of the larger universe to see that there are many other worlds and galaxy-wide organizations that roam space near Earth.

I particularly liked the panels where Mark’s dad tells him to hold his breath when he’s in space.

The art isn’t very detailed but it works with the story well and it’s easy to tell the emotions of the characters from how they’re depicted.
