I Need My Own Crew

Today I am truly all over the place in my rambling. I take a look at getting back into Destiny, and how confusing it can be, I watch the next episode of Star Trek, and I take another step in reading The Rook.

I enjoyed each of these, and I hope you enjoy reading about my thoughts on them.

Lost in Destiny

I am surprised at myself. I thought I was a fairly intelligent person. I have a Masters in Business Administration from Drexel University and a Bachelors degree in Psychology from UC San Diego. I’ve written software for the healthcare industry and develop financial processing algorithms for handling credit cards, but I am completely confused about what to do in Destiny 2.

I suppose the bottom line is that I took a few years off of the game so I’m not in the current ‘meta’, but I am totally lost. And I think that’s a problem for people coming back to the game.

Sure, I could very easily jump into the current Shadowkeep: Season of Arrivals, but I would very much like to get some of the flavor of the game before starting my grind. Maybe that’s my problem…the game is built for endgame content now with a 750 power starting point and no guidance on how to actually figure out any of the lore of the world.

So what to do…I hunt the interweb to find some guidance. Eventually, I stumble upon the idea to run through the Red War campaign. At least if I go through the campaign again, things will be somewhat familiar, and I might have my feet under me by the time I finish up with that.

Ok…I’ll do that. The silly thing is, the references I see on the web all talk about leveling up my character to 10 or my light level to 100, but there are no more levels, and my starting point is 750. I’m sure I’ll be fine but it is odd that there is so little guidance for people just coming to the game or those coming back after a long hiatus.

Oh well, I’m sure things will be fun once I get back into the swing of things.

Humanity in a Superbeing

Where No Man Has Gone Before
Episode 3 of Season 1 of Star Trek
Written by Samuel A. Peeples
Directed by James Goldstone

This episode was actually the ‘second’ pilot episode and would have been the first pilot with Captain Kirk, but in the actual airing of things, this ended up being the 3rd shown.

The Enterprise heads towards the edge of the galaxy and runs into trouble as a couple of crew members start exhibiting heightened ESP powers and are able to start manipulating things with their minds. As things progress and they become more powerful and ‘god-like’, it becomes apparent that these two will soon be so drunk with power that they’ll lose their humanity.

Kirk, of course, is able to save the day with the help of the crew.

Again with the god-like powers!

I know that eventually there will be less focus on super-beings enforcing their will on the Enterprise, but two of the first 3 episodes have been about Kirk and crew in a battle of wits against overwhelming and god-like odds.

Regardless of the similarities though, this is another good episode. Where Charlie X focuses on an adolescent coming into his powers as he learns about the opposite sex, this episode is more about finding the humanity in a super-being. Kirk is able to convince Dr. Elizabeth Dehner to use her new powers for the good of the Enterprise crew and the two of them are able to overcome Kirk’s academy friend Gary Mitchell who did not ask for the powers he was given but who was none-the-less trying to take over the ship.

I’m enjoying this rewatch though I think I might have to start tracking how many god-like beings there are in the Star Trek universe.

Cool and Tidy

Chapter 4 of The Rook by Daniel O’Malley.

This is an interesting chapter as it’s our first real experience with Gestalt and a truly bizarre power. Gestalt is one person that inhabits four bodies and I think this chapter does a great job of expressing the feelings of dealing with the awkwardness that entails.

Not only do we see two of the bodies exhibiting different behavior in Myfanwy’s office, but we also hear of a third body, a woman, who is engaged in a military operation.

While the previous chapters kinda talked about the strange powers of the Checquy, I think this chapter really bring it home. Myfanwy is gonna have to deal with this/these person/people since they are also a Rook but at the same time I think it really drives home the idea that whoever is out to get her is a very dangerous opponent.

If you’re interested, my deep dive of this chapter can be found here.

It’s a Wrap

I think I’m gonna have to look for a guild or clan in Destiny 2. I figure that would be the closest thing I can have to being part of the crew of the Enterprise. Those people mesh so well and are able to overcome all sorts of issues that it would be great to have that feeling in a game where I am currently lost.

Sure, the Enterprise is not as closely linked as Gestalt in The Rook but they do function as a unit quite often and with Kirk making the decisions, things usually work out for the best.

I like the idea that I can find my own ‘crew’ so I’m putting that on my Destiny to-do list.
