Flying Monkeys and a Fateful Sox Foundation

Today was a busy day with plenty going on. A 3-mile run took me virtually to an airport where I’ve piloted private planes multiple times, but then I watched some excellent shows…one based on a comic, one based on an iconic 1940s book, and one featuring a child wizard. With the MLB playoffs and another chapter of Dune included, I think I’d call it a success. Anyway, here’s the rundown…

The Rundown

  • Houston beats the Red Sox for 1–0 lead in ALCS
  • Running to Montgomery Field
  • The Fate of Duncan
  • Harry bests Tom Riddle
  • Skilling up in The Secret World
  • Love the Monkey
  • Not the Same Foundation

The Goods

The Astros Take Another Step

Houston continued its march towards a return to the World Series with a victory over the Red Sox in the first game of the ACLS. They look pretty good so far, but the injury to Lance McCullers could prove challenging to overcome.

Flying is Safe

Leaving Jack Murphy Stadium, I virtually run up the 15 freeway to Aero Drive and head to Montgomery Gibbs Field. The 2.6-mile run takes me to this airport that was the destination of a Cessna that recently crashed (on October 11) that killed 2 people. In 1978, there was an even deadlier aviation incident; Flight 182 was a Pacific Southwest Airlines 727, collided with a Cessna that took off from this airfield. 144 people died in what was the first fatal and deadliest air disaster in California history.

The Fate of Duncan

Chapter 25 in Dune is a fairly critical installment in the early pages of the second book. It revolves around Duncan Idaho and Kynes, the planetary ecologist. For Ducan, he shows up, saves Paul and Jessica, and carries them to the safety of the Fremen. Kynes also plays a significant role in the safety of the new Duke as he and Paul establish a level of respect that will help Paul work with the Fremen in the future. The end of the chapter sees Idaho fighting for his life, saving Paul, Jessica, and Kynes.

Harry bests Tom Riddle

The Chamber of Secrets is finally revealed to Harry as he struggles to figure out how to help Hermione and Ginney. Where the first movie showed some strong teamwork between Harry, Hermione, and Ron, this movie seems to focus more on Harry and his fight against Tom Riddle. It’s a close battle, and I get the impression that Harry kinda channels both Hermione and Ron in the final fight. It’s a pretty cool battle, and I love the foreshadowing from earlier in the movie as the Pheonix plays a critical role.

Skilling Up

In Chicken Noodle’s 9th game session in Secret World Legends, she was able to attain level 10, and she found herself with a bunch of Ability and Skill points to spend. While she could not advance in the main story mission, she did decide to grab a few skills that would hopefully help along the way. Restorative Reload, Odds and Evens, Blood Flow, and Opening Shot will help round out her shotgun abilities and give her some boost Blood Magic damage.

Ampersand is my Favorite

I have to say right off the bat that I didn’t like many of the characters in the comic of Y The Last Man. Characters definitely had flaws, and I did not see much in the way of redeeming traits. That is except for Ampersand, and like the comic, the monkey is my favorite character of the series on Hulu. I’m only one episode in, but the men have died off, Yorick is a prick, 355 is over-the-top, and the new President leaves a lot to be desired. Actually, it looks like there may be a lot more focus on how things progress in the new government than in the comics…we’ll see how that goes.

Not Your Father’s Foundation

After the first episode, it was apparent that Foundation on Apple TV is not the same story as in the books. Sure, it is based on the incredible imagination of Issac Asimov, but there are definitely differences…which makes sense because this is television, after all. As far as I recall, Gaal Dornick, Seldon’s math buddy, is not from a backward theocratic waterworld where she has to defy orthodoxy to become a disciple of psychohistory, and the Emperor is not a genetic clone trio of characters. Regardless of the changes, I am enjoying the series, and while the terrorism angle seems to smack of recent history, I think this can be an excellent addition to my regular watching schedule.

It’s a Wrap

I suppose I went through all these things yesterday, and I don’t quite know how to refer to things. I call it today because technically, I write most of these rambles the day before I post them but…you know.. it really doesn’t matter. I’ll call it whatever I want. Today was a good day, and I hope you all had an interesting and enjoyable day as well.
