I love the Zone Alarm antivirus suite of products. I have been using them for years. But lately, I have run into some serious problems updating Eve Online, and I think it has something to do with Zone Alarm.
The last few times I have launched the Eve launcher when there is a patch to download, the update fails. This has been driving me crazy.
The current Eve launcher goes through 4 steps when performing an update. I usually get past the 1st which is what indicates that I need the update. The second step seems to marshal the files I need to download. Well, this is where things fail for some reason.
I keep getting a message indicating that I can no longer connect to the server. Now, for some reason, I figure it can connect to tell me that I need an update, but it can not connect to let me download the update – frustration.
Searching online offered some help – turn off antivirus and firewall, reboot and install, but I really do not like turning my protection off for anything. From what I remember, an unprotected computer can be infected within minutes – so I do not usually turn off my protection.
But the post got me thinking about what could be causing an inability to connect to a server. I scanned through the settings and tried a few, but no luck. On to the advanced settings – the post mentioned turning off the 'Web Scan', but I did not see anything that said web scan.
Finally, buried down in the 'Antivirus & Firewall'tab. Under 'Antivirus & Spyware' settings. Clicking on the 'Advanced Settings'. Scrolling down to the 'Premium Protections' tab. There is a checkbox labeled 'Enable Web Monitoring' with the subtitle – Blocks web threats before they reach your browser and computer. Well, this sounded kinda like the 'Web Scan' mentioned in the forum post. Let's try it.
Viola! My Eve launcher started the update process and successfully completed the patch.
So if you run into these types of issues. Give this a try. I certainly use this process the next time there is a patch for Eve.
This is post 2 in my Blaugust Challenge.
