Blaugust Day 17 – Training Schedule

5k Training Schedule

I found what I think is a good 5k training schedule that is focused on the run-walk method. Jeff Galloway published this schedule and I think it will help me to get to a 5k injury free. While the schedule lists today (Monday) as a walk or cross training day, the walking part of the run-walk method actually occurs on running days. The idea is that you run for a bit then take a walk break. The idea is to start out with a one to two minute run followed by two to three minutes of walking then repeat for the entire run. You're not going for any speed record, but trying to work up your fitness level. After working with the 1-2 minute/2-3 minute pattern for a few runs, you can increase the running portion and decrease the walking portion, but even when working up to a full 5k, half marathon, or marathon, you would still take walk breaks periodically to reduce stress on yourself and let your endurance build. I like the idea and think that for someone who's not a spring chicken anymore, it should work better than just pushing myself. I really don't want to get injured – it hurts and it sets back your fitness. I know I'm not gonna win any races, but I want to improve my fitness level first and foremost.

Basis

My Basis shows me as taking 10,028 steps and burning 2317 calories. I think the cool part is that it shows my longest period of idleness as 1 hour and 5 minutes. I really want to make sure I get up at least every hour or even every half hour, so this is something I need to work on, particularly days when I am not scheduled to run.

Fitbit

My Fitbit Flex shows I walked 11,797 steps today, going 4.98 miles and burning 2401 calories. Kinda close to each other, but of course not exact. One reason could be that I wear my Fitbit on my dominant right hand so it might be picking up writing movements or opening doors or other movements that are not walking (as I write this, I just picked up the remote control with my right hand to fast forward through some commercials).

I am happy that both activity trackers showed that I took more than my 10k step goal for the day. I want to try to get to the 10k level walking on days when I am not running, and maybe even when I am scheduled to run.

It's still not too late to join Blaugust – just go to the initiative page at Tales of the Aggronaut or take a look at the Blaugust Nook on Anook.
