Blaugust Day 15 – Ready to Run

Running Gear

I went by the Road Runner Sports store today to get my shoes and some gear so I can start my training. The shoes I had laying around the house where all over a year old and had too many miles on them. When running, you should switch out your shoes periodically and not let them get too much mileage. According to Runners World, you should change shoes every 300 to 500 miles. When training for a marathon you can put in 30 to 50 miles a week, so you'd end up getting new shoes every 2.5 months, but since I'm only looking to get up to a 5k at this point, these shoes should last me for pretty much the entire training period and beyond.

Asics GT 2000

The Asics GT 2000 look like a pretty good shoe, and they are very comfortable on my feet. They provide a little support for over pronation which is exactly what I am looking for. I'm thinking they should work good and I look to start breaking them in tomorrow.

Injinji footwear toesocks

These are the first layer I use to protect my feet. These provide a nice separation for each of my toes which I think does a good job ensuring I don't get any blisters between my toes. They are soft and provide a little cushion, but I like to wear a second pair of socks on top of them.

Thorlo Running Mini-Crew

These provide some thick cushioning to protect my joints from impacts and when combined with the toesocks, I feel I have a good protection against blisters.

It's still not too late to join Blaugust – just go to the initiative page at Tales of the Aggronaut or take a look at the Blaugust Nook on Anook.

  1. I’ll have to try wearing two pairs of socks and the toe socks thing. I usually just wear regular socks with my running shoes!

    • The toe socks are great – thin so you can wear them with the thicker more cushiony pair. They also wick the moisture away so the thicker pair gets more damp than the inner pair.

    • They feel weird at first, but with each little piggy snuggled in their own pocket, it works great. Never tried toe shoes though.
