All Star Flyby

Instead of gaming last night, I watched baseball and did a bit of reading.

Mike Trout All Star MVP

The Major League Baseball All Star game was held last night and once again, the star was Mike Trout. He is truly in a class of his own in the baseball world and I hope the Angels do what it takes to ensure he sticks with the the team for his entire career. By hitting a home run in his first at bat on Tuesday, Trout achieved a rare ASG Cycle – hitting a single, a double, a triple, and a home run in your All star game career – and he is only 23 and in his 4th ASG. To top it off, he became the first player to win consecutive MVP awards for the All star game. He's a fun player to watch and hopefully will be dazzling fans for many years to come.

Hawkeye #1

A good start to what I hope and have heard is a good series. Matt Fraction and David Aja put together a nice tale about what one of the Avengers does during his time off. It's what you'd expect – help out the poor and downtrodden. Clint Barton lets his emotional side show as he not only saves the people living in his appartment building from crappy landlords, he also rescues a dog that helps him out.

Pluto flyby

After flying billions of miles, the New Horizons mission is finally accomplishing its climatic achievement – a flyby of Pluto within 8000 miles. This is a great accomplishemnt for mankind and shows something of what we can do when we put our best and brightest minds to a task.

Here is a detailed picture from NASA that shows mountain ranges and valleys on the surface of the planet (I grew up with Pluto being a planet, and I am still gonna call it a planet). The detail of the mountains is incredible for something so far away.

Here is a shot from further away that shows less detail but more of the furthest object mankind has sent ships to explore.
