Reading Comics week 45 of 2018

My comic reading this past week was kinda all over the place but I found a few that were pretty interesting. In addition to working my way through Y: The Last Man and The Activity for my Graphic Novel Book Club, I also snuck in a couple issues of Batman: The Long Halloween before that was removed from DC Universe. Finally, I was able to finish off a few #1s that were related to Marvel Unlimited’s New Releases last week.

  • Y: The Last Man #11 – #15 by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, Published by Vertigo in 2003 – The longest run I read through this past week was from Y: The Last Man. I got through issues 11 through 15 which covers a large chunk of the 3rd volume (One Small Step) of the title and it sees Yorick (the last man), Agent 355, Dr. Mann, and of course Ampersand (the star of the comic) arriving in Kansas to prepare for the imminent landing of the astronauts from the International Space Station. But they’re not the only ones interested in getting their hands on a couple of living male astronauts.
  • Batman: The Long Halloween #7 & #8 by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, Published by DC Comics in 1997 – These two issues, April Fool’s Day and Mother’s Day, feature the Riddler and Scarecrow as Batman, Harvey Dent, and Captain Gordon continue to split their time between hunting the Holiday Killer and taking down The Roman, neither of which seems to be close to being accomplished.
  • Rise of the Black Panther #1 by Evan Narcisse, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Paul Renaud, Publishedby Marvel Comics in 2018 – This issue was packed with information about the origins of Black Panther and his heritage and I think it’s a must read for anyone interested in the character.
  • You Are Deadpool #1 by Al Ewing and Salva Espin, Publishedby Marvel Comics in 2018 – This is a unique comic that takes Deadpool’s 4th wall breaking to the next level where the reader gets a ”choose your own adventure” with the Merc with a Mouth. It was really fun.
  • Avengers #1 by Jason Aaron and David Curiel, Published by Marvel Comics in 2018 – This interesting first issue ties events from 1 million years ago to today by showing how the original super powered beings – Iron Fist, Odin, Agamotto, Lady Phoenix, Starbrand, Black Panther, and the Spirit of Vengeance – faced off against a foe that is now assaulting the current day Avengers. I’m hooked with this setup.
  • The Activity #1 – #3 by Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads, Published by Image Comics in 2012 – This is a seemingly realistic look at a team of intelligence agents that perform extralegal activities in support of the military, drug enforcement and search and rescue operations.
