First Look Review Of Doctor Strange #2

In the previous issue of Doctor Strange, we saw that Stephen had lost his powers. Something basically turned off his ability to touch magic and he had to turn the Tony Stark for advice. Based on that discussion, Strange left the planet in search of an extraterrestrial solution to his problem. The only trouble was that he crash landed on a planet that had never heard of magic and found himself sitting in a jail cell.

Doctor Strange #2: Sorcerer Supreme of the Galaxy, Part Two by Mark Waid and Jesús Saiz. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018.

Trying everything he could to see if The was magic on this world, Stephen grew more and more desperate, that was before the arcanologist, Pkzkrfmknna, was thrown into the cell with him. Kanna, as Strange calls her, is adept at technomancy so he see that as hope there is magic he can touch on this world.

Together they break out of the jail and steal the Eye of Basphorous which was supposed to grant the wielder a super powerful wish and with it, Stephen could regain his magic. But when the Doc tries to use the Eye, it just fizzles and before he can try again they had to race to get to Kanna’s ship.

They escape the planet and as they do so, Stephen triggers the Eye but instead of using it to regain his magic, he locks the inhabitants of the planet away…it seems they were technologically advanced and now that they saw how weak humans were they were gonna head to Earth to take over.

Strange had to sacrifice his regaining magic to prevent the invasion. He had saved Earth but was still without his greatest ability.

The art in this issue continues to impress me as it did in the first issue. Jesús Saiz does a really good job with the aliens and I like the ship design he chose for the escape from the planet. Mark Waid continues to work well in this one too as he dangles the hope of the return of Stephen’s abilities only to pull that hope away at the last minute. I look forward to the next issue and I think it’ll be interesting to see where the relationship between Kanna and the Doctor goes.

I give Doctor Strange #2 a First Look Rating of a B+.
