The Missing Suit

Invincible #6

Writer: Robert Kirkman
Artist: Cory Walker
Colorist: Bill Crabtree
Published by Image Comics, 2003.

After the outer space adventures of our hero in the last issue, this installment stays much closer to home. At least on the planet, as Mark heads to upstate University where he’s hoping to go to college.

While this issue still has it’s superhero team and big fight scenes it’s much more focused on the normal life of Mark and his family. We see Mark and his dad playing catch, his parents enjoying some alone time, and Mark hanging out with a friend on the way to see if college life would work for them.

It really struck me how Kirkman wants Invincible to be about a normal teenager in a normal family that just happens to have superpowers.

We also see more of the Teen Team and start to see some of the Guardians of the Globe. I’m sure we’re gonna get more into them as the series continues so its fun to see the beginnings of the characters entry into the world of adult superheroes.

The conflict in this story revolves around a member – or ex-member – of the Guardians who has lost his powers. Apparently he hired a ‘tailor’ to build him a super-powered suit so he could rejoin the team but someone has stolen it. That someone is most likely the hero who ordered the suit so we get a glimpse of the idea that not all super heroes are always good.

So far in this series, that seems to be a theme…just because someone is super-powered does not mean the are good…or always bad.
