Saturday @ WonderCon@Home 2021

WonderCon 2021 is taking place this weekend and once again it is a virtual convention. While I really enjoy attending conventions in person, I find some benefits to the virtual thing primarily in that I can watch multiple panels that were scheduled at the same time.

I can also watch the videos whenever I want, pause and replay them, and share them with friends who don’t usually go to the convention.

A Few Panels I Would Like to Watch

  • Netflix & Mark Millar: The Cast of Jupiter’s Legacy
For the first time ever, Mark Millar (Wanted, Kingsman, Kick-Ass) brings the full cast of the new Netflix series, Jupiter’s Legacy together to talk about the epic superhero saga coming to Netflix on May 7. Based on the graphic novels by Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, Jupiter’s Legacy is an epic superhero drama that spans decades and navigates the complex dynamics of family, power, and loyalty. The panel will include Josh Duhamel, Leslie Bibb, Ben Daniels, Mike Wade, Matt Lanter, Elena Kampouris, Andrew Horton, and Ian Quinlan.
  • Voyager 25th Anniversary Documentary Team
David Zappone (co-director), Kevin Layne (co-director), Joseph Kornbrodt (producer,) and Lolita Fatjo (producer) are joined by special guest Garrett Wang (Ensign Harry Kim of Star Trek: Voyager) discuss the crowdfunded untitled Voyager Documentary currently in production. The team will partake in a Q&A session moderated by “Dr. Trek” Larry Nemecek.
  • Gaming Across Comics & Books
Pop Culture and Tabletop Gaming are overflowing with fantastic storytelling and content right now. Come listen to a roundtable discussion with industry leaders and veterans B Dave Walters (comic writer, Dungeons & Dragons), Elisa Teague (senior RPG producer, Renegade Games), Gail Simone (comic writer, DC Comics), Jim Zub (comic writer, Marvel), and Matt Forbeck (author, Dungeons & Dragons) as they share stories about how gaming is growing and expanding to a larger audience through storytelling and media.
  • Composer Stories: The Evolution of Music in Video Games
Video game scores have come a long way from 8-bit MIDI to full sweeping orchestral scores. Composers Christopher Tin (Civilization IV, VI), Ilan Eshkeri (Ghost of Tsushima), Nami Melumad (Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond), Inon Zur (Fallout series), and Bobby Tahouri (Marvel’s Avengers) alongside co-moderators Natalie Baartz (VP, Creative, Film, TV & Visual Media at BMI) and Chandler Poling (co-founder of White Bear PR) discuss what went into scoring their award-winning music and the challenges that come with recording live instruments for video games.
  • Exploring the Dark Comic Book Origins of Blade Runner
Forbidden Planet TV’s Andrew Sumner discusses the launch of Titan Comics’ ongoing Blade Runner: Origins title and explores the dark beginnings of the replicant-hunting Blade Runner unit with title authors K. Perkins (Supergirl), Mellow Brown (Starz’ American Gods), and Mighty Mark Johnson (Blade Runner 2019) – all under the watchful, all-seeing eye of Titan Comics’ senior creative editor David Leach (David Leach Conquers the Universe)!
  • Fiction and Features: Telling Functional Stories in Games
Charles Beacham (writer, Mythical Games), Sam Maggs (writer, various projects), Jillian Scharr (project lead writer, Harebrained Studios), Josh Foreman (senior level designer, Mythical Games), and Milo Smiley (production coordinator, Infinity Ward) discuss how game-makers can tell immersive, engaging stories within any genre of game, their experiences developing narrative for blockbuster games and the challenges they’ve faced, in this panel moderated by Mythical’s Justin Kruger (director of community).
  • Image Comics: Bestselling Writers and their Comics Storytelling Techniques
Top tier Image Comics writers including Rodney Barnes (Killadelphia), Alex De Campi (Dracula, Motherf**Ker), Kieron Gillen (Die), Scott Snyder (Nocterra), and Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian) come together to share their storytelling secrets, behind the scenes process, and tease upcoming projects. Moderated by Image Comics’ Talent Liaison, Marla Eizik.
  • Ooops . . . Science as Problem and Solution
Questions of science and its potential for both benefit and disaster are endemic to speculative fiction. Bookseller Ali T. Kokmen explores the spectrum of positive and negative applications with creators Sarah Gailey (The Echo Wife), Eric Glover and Arielle Jovellanos (Black Star), Laura Lam (Goldilocks), Jonathan Messinger (Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian series, #3 The Uncommon Cold), and Andy Weir (Project Hail Mary). It’s a Wrap

These panels and all the Saturday panels are available at the WonderCon@Home YouTube page.

While I am looking forward to the day that I can go to a convention in person again, I hope things are set up for all future conventions to present recorded panels for all fans to enjoy online.,
