A Beginning

Ok, I know I’ve done some reading of Dune in the past but with the new movie coming out I decided to give it another re-read. Like many things I’ve been doing these days, I seem to be re-doing stuff I enjoyed in the past in the hopes of regaining a sense of excitement and accomplishment. I think I can use these fun diversions to help motivate me to balance the areas of my life, from gaming to blogging, working to reading, and from housework to exploring shows. Overall, I’m looking forward to following along with Paul just as much as I am enjoying my romp through Middle Earth on my Beorning and learning about Eorzea with my Arcanist.

Balance

Today I kept things short and sweet by going through what is basically the prologue to the first ‘chapter’ of Dune. Actually Dune doesn’t really have explicit chapters but instead has sections separated by readings from some of the literature of the time after the events of the story. The first chapter features writing from a book penned by Princess Irulan who plays a significant role in the life of Paul Atreides. The most important thing I take away from reading though this section is about how beginnings are a time to focus on getting things in balance. If you can’t get things in balance at the start then that doesn’t bode well for events down the road. Anyway, with mention of the Bene Gesserit, Muad’Dib, Arrakis, and Caladan this short blurb is, in my view, an excellent starting point for the tale of Paul Atreides.

A Start for A Beorning

With this being the beginning of September I wanted to also get rolling in Middle Earth on my new Beorning and while I only had a short time for my game session, I was able to get through the starting quests. Actually the starting quests are pretty quick and although they give a basic background for the Beorning story, there is not much to them. As it was, I had to find a cow, find my sister, deal with some goblins, and figure out why the wizard Radagast was visiting Grimbeorn’s Lodge. I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the Beorning class and thus I’d rate this first game session with Pangolyn a success.
