Review for One-Punch Man Volume 01, Punch 3

First Look Review for One-Punch Man Volume 01, Punch 3

This chapter brings some great humor to the story and we see that others who attain their dreams are not fulfilled once they have what they’ve always wanted.

One-Punch Man Vol 01, Punch 3

Walking Disaster by ONE and Yusuke Murata. Published by Viz, 2014.

Saitama has a casual encounter with a man turned monster in this chapter but once again he only has to punch once. This monster is created by more typical means – he drinks a potion designed to give him strength. Actually, the monster, Marugori, is teamed up with his brainy brother, Fukegao who developed the steroid. Not only does the drink give him strength but it increases his size to enormous proportions…so much that he towers above the city.

With Fukegao on his shoulder, Marugori goes on a rampage and destroys City D with a single punch. He then turns to City B but Saitama isn’t interested in letting this guy destroy it too. Instead he jumps up on his other shoulder for a ride. It’s here that we see the humor in this title as Fukegao yells at his brother to “Kill the guy on your shoulder!”

Oops…he slaps the shoulder that the brother is on.

Enraged, the monster throws Saitama from his shoulder and looks to step on him but instead of killing our hero, he simply creates a giant crater. As with the previous chapters there is a social commentary though as Saitama asks the big guy what it’s like being the strongest man and fulfilling his dreams and he simply replies that it feels empty. I assume this is because his brother is now dead but Saitama later comments that overwhelming strength, like his ability to take anything down with one punch, is boring.

Of course he makes this comment as he lands his one punch on Marugori and the fight is over. Too bad the giant fell on City B as he crashed to the Earth.

I rate this issue a B.
