I have to say I was totally excited when I heard the X-Files was coming back to television, almost as much as when I heard that Star Wars was getting a new movie. This was one of those gotta watch shows for 9 seasons. Before DVRs, before the Internet was on a phone I carried around everywhere with me, I would have an appointment with friends every Friday night to watch this show. And as soon as the music started, everyone HAD to be quiet so we could all sit, glued to a boxy standard definition 20 inch TV set, to hear every conspiracy theory of Mulder and every scientific debunking of Scully. It was MUST SEE TV. I even went to the first X-Files convention in San Diego, I loved this show so much.
All these years later, and a few so-so movies…the new episodes are here. I was so excited, I had to watch the back end of a really crappy football game so I wouldn't chance missing out on anything. Thanks to Fox for playing the show at a time…after the football game and stupid award ceremony and talking head babbling was over…such a waste of time. And I didn't trust my Tivo to not miss the beginning or the end for some reason.
So there I was watching LIVE television again and loving it.
Honestly, I want to watch it again and again before I comment on it too much, but I loved the fact they used the original opening – that music brings back so many memories. Seeing Mulder and Scully together again was great – the chemistry is still there even after all these years, and I just wanted it to go on and on.
The story was pretty good though I felt it got a bit rushed at the end. They seemed to be trying to present the characters in a way that new viewers would not be totally lost, but was not too overwhelmingly redundant for fans that watched the original episodes so long ago. To that point, I'm a bit skeptical about how quickly Mulder dropped his lifelong quest of untangling the alien conspiracy for the equally confounding governmental conspiracy. But then I suppose in the years since the X-Files were closed, there has been a ton of evidence that the government has been doing some pretty shady things, so I can see the shift to a more terrestrial source of mystery.
All in all, I loved the episode and am looking forward to the rest of the too short season – I am already sad for the fact that this will only be 6 episodes…I want more!!!!
