My Reading:

This segment of the issue is the first that the man from the future relates and it starts with Peter Quill returning from school where’s he defended a girl the kids were picking on. His mother has dinner on the way when she sees lights in the nearby forest. As figures emerge from the light, she realizes they have guns and are asking for Meredith Quill. Seeing they’re not human, it’s too late – the aliens shoot her saying the “bloodline will not continue”.

Peter sees what happened and runs through the upstairs rooms to the closet where he grabs a shotgun. Kablam! He gets them with both barrels and as he falls due to the recoil, he spots another gun. This one doesn’t look anything like what you’d find at a local gun store and it’s got a starburst symbol on the side.

But there’s no time to examine it further as a spaceship appears and destroys the house. Peter got away but obviously has a bunch of questions.

My Thoughts:

Marvel Now! Point One is a set of stories that feature some of the personalities of the Marvel universe and is basically a kicking off point for titles. This issue contains 6 stories with this one…Guardians of the Galaxy featuring Star-Lord. The sad thing is, this issue came out a couple years before the movie and it provides a pretty good introduction to Star-Lord’s origin, but I never read it. Beyond that, they didn’t really explain why the aliens are after him except for the bloodline. The art by McNiven is pretty good and the story was easy to follow particularly since I already know it from the movies. The hook is pretty good and it will be interesting to see what the rest of the title is all about.

My Rating: B
