The Comics of November 2017

Daily Ramble 97: The Comics of November 2017

In November I bumped up my comicbook reading again, actually covering the most issues since the 55 I read in June. 40 Comics is quite a few for me, particularly during a holiday month and I think the primary method I used to get through 40 this month was to follow story arcs. I read through 4 arcs and a bunch of issues related to those arcs.

Publisher

As far as publishers go this month, Marvel remained at number one but DC moved into 2nd place. On top of that, I didn’t even read any IDW this month when it was my 2nd most read publisher last month.

  • Marvel Comics – 20
  • DC Comics – 18
  • Image – 2
  • Dark Horse – 1

Story Arcs

This month, I included the Marvel Now! Point One issue as a bunch of individual comics since there were really 6 different stories there. DC Universe Rebirth also got broken down into 5 parts since there were 4 chapters and the epilogue.

  • Marvel 1963 – 6
  • Marvel Now! Point One – 6
  • DC Rebirth – 5
  • DC Rebirth Followon – 5
  • Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – 4
  • Batman: Year One – 4
  • Avengers X-Sanction – 4

The List

I made it past the 10 story arc requirement for a top 10 list so this month I finally have to drop some arcs off the list. I also read some really good stories this month and some classics. With the additions of DC Universe Rebirth and the 2 Batman arcs, Marvel falls out of the top 10.

  1. DC Universe Rebirth <- Added November 2017
  2. Saga Vol 3
  3. Batman: The Dark Knight Returns <- Added November 2017
  4. Girls Vol 1: Conception
  5. Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
  6. Batman: Year One <- Added November 2017
  7. Titans Hunt
  8. Superman Lois and Clark: Arrival
  9. Locke & Key: Welcome to Lovecraft
  10. The Final Days of Superman

Falling off ther list are: Wolverine and the X-Men: Welcome to the X-Men! Now Die! and Wolverine and the X-Men: Mutatus Mutandis.

And I know The Dark Knight Returns is a true classic, but for me, I don’t have the sense of history that lets me put it up at number one. Maybe I’ll reassess that at some point, but for November 2017 and my current reading, I rate it 3rd behind DC Universe Rebirth and Saga volume 3. It’s probably because I saw the movie long before reading the comic so I didn’t get all the emotional impact or surprises but I can still understand how some people would rate it higher than I have it here for November 2017.
