First Look for December 12, 2017
Today’s first look takes a peek at an issue from 2011 and one from 1963 and while Cable’s giving it all he’s got, Thor almost lost his hammer again. The Avengers X-Sanction finale features a slew of heroes on both sides of the fight and Journey into Mystery #91 brings back Loki as Thor’s nemesis, even though he’s still locked up on Asgard. Here’s what I thought after my first read…
Avengers X-Sanction #4
From 2011 and written by Jeff Loeb and drawn by Ed McGuinness, this is the final issue of the limited series. Cable vs. the Avengers all by himself…will he succeed? He already took down Falcon, Captain America, Iron Man, and Red Hulk – and there are only a couple of Avengers left. But we’ve got a bunch of mutants on the ship that’ve joined the party too. Last issue, Blaquesmith brought in Cable’s dad, Cyclops and his daughter (the one he’s fighting to protect) Hope Summers and they are trying to figure out what’s going on…in the meantime, they’re helping Cable against the mightiest heroes. As Cable takes on Wolverine, Hope and Cyclops deal with Spider-Man and the battle rages. All the while, the techno-organic virus is invading every cell of Cable’s body. At this point there’s no telling who’s gonna win or what the repercussions will be for the losers. This turned out to be a fun 4 issue limited series that I enjoyed since it taught me things about characters I didn’t know.
Journey into Mystery #91
Back to 1963 and an issue written by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber and drawn by Joe Sinnott and Sol Brodsky. Once again we have an issue that turns on Thor having access to his hammer before his 60 second timer runs out. In this one, Loki, who’s locked up by Odin on Asgard, grants powers to Sandu – a mind reader on Earth. With his new found powers, the charlatan works some evil magic to rob banks and tamper with people’s minds. This of course comes to the attention of Thor who tries to stop him only to have his hammer sent into a different dimension. When Sandu tries to pick up and use the hammer, he short-circuits Loki’s magic and everything goes back to as it was before the tricks started (good thing for Thor it was within the 60 second time period). It was a nice little issue that continued developing the relationships between Thor, Loki , and Odin and made me wonder when the 60 second thing is gonna stop being the main twist.
