Planned books for February 2018

Daily Ramble 139: Planned books for February 2018

I’m pretty close to finishing off all of the books I planned for January 2018 so I figured it’d be good to lay out my plans for February. As with last month, I’m gonna put together another 5 fun titles to focus on and a couple of science and history books so even though it’s a short month, I’m gonna try to read the same amount.

Silverthorn

The next book in the Rift War Saga is Silverthorn. In some places it’s considered the 3rd book in the series and in others it’s listed as the 2nd. The main thing is the first book Magician was split into 2 since it was so long and I read it as 2 so I’m gonna call this the 3rd book. I’m looking to see where things go even though I did read it back in college. So far, the series has been fun.

Prelude to Foundation

I’ve finally reached the first book of the Foundation series. I’m also just past the midway point of my planned Asimov reading. 8 books down, 7 to go. Once again these are rereads from years ago so I’m somewhat familiar with the big ideas of the story but it’s been so long I don’t recall any details. I’m impressed that this series has held up over all these years and reading them again, I can see why I enjoyed them so much the first time.

Book Club Reading

With the two books I’m reading as rereads down, I turn to the clubs I follow. Sword and Laser is reading A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle which I’ve always wanted to read since I was younger. Winter Tide by Ruthanna Emrys is a selection of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club and I chose it from the two offered since it sounded neat and while I will get around to reading the other offering, the synopsis sounded better right now. Finally, I’m gonna reread The Rook by Daniel O’Malley for Mysterious Galaxy. I really enjoyed this book the first time and since it’s been a bit and I want to keep up with the book club, I’m looking forward to reading it again.

Science and History

Finally I come to the extra section of my reading plans. I’ve been enjoying these so I’ll keep them up as long as that’s the case. For science I’m gonna read Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz. I used to love statistics so I’m hoping this fills my need to read up on some stats…we’ll see. I wanted to read Godel, Escher, Bach but it’s a long book and I wanted to wait for a longer month for that one (and I don’t think there’s an audible version). And for history, the club listed Caesar: Life of a Colossus by Adrian Goldsworthy which I think’ll be good since I haven’t read much ancient history since high school.

Overall

5+2 books is gonna be a push for February. I’m gonna try to get an early start if I can finish off the January books a bit early but we’ll see. I’ve got some good diversity in genre and publication date and even though I’ve got a few rereads I feel like I’ve got a reasonable and reachable goal.
