29 Days to #SDCC2018

The Eisner Awards, awarded each year for creative achievement in American comic books, are given out every year at the San Diego Comic-Con and with 29 days to #SDCC2018 I wanted to take a quick look at the Best Continuing Series nominees.

Best Continuing Series

  • Black Hammer, by Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston, and David Rubín – I’ve read this series, at least the first volume of it and really enjoyed the world and characters that inhabit it. One thing I like about this title is how it acts as a hub for a constellation of series that take place in the world that this title has created.
  • Giant Days, by John Allison, Max Sarin, and Liz Fleming – I haven’t read this series at all but it’s on my short list to read soon.
  • Hawkeye, by Kelly Thompson, Leonardo Romero, and Mike Walsh – This series has been a lot of fun. Kelly Thompson has put together a great character in Kate Bishop and while I’ve only read the first volume I am looking forward to continuing.
  • Monstress, by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda – this was the selection of the comic-book club I belong to last Christmas and it was a pretty good read. The art in this one is incredible and the story is complex but entertaining and I liked the fantastical world that was created. I’ll have to get back to reading this one as well.
  • The Wicked + The Divine, by Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvie – This is a fun read where I enjoyed trying to figure out what real life personalities are represented by the various characters just as much as I enjoyed reading the story. There are 6 graphic novels that’ve been collected so far and I’ve got a bunch of catching up to do here as well.

From what I’ve read of these titles, I’d probably go with Black Hammer as my pick but it’s definitely a close thing. The way Dean Ormston put together artwork that was reminiscent of historic comic styles was great and the story was compelling. I’m not discounting the other titles as they all deserve their nominations but from what I’ve read, that’s my selection. Who knows, when I read more of the volumes in each of these title, I may change my mind.
