Comics Corner Review: All-New Wolverine #32

I have to say that thus far I am really enjoying All-New Wolverine. The story arcs have been well written and the art has been nicely done. With that said, I am also looking forward to the original Wolverine coming back this week. I wonder what’s gonna happen to Laura. I’m sure they’ll figure out something good to do with her since this series as been so good. As a matter of fact, I really haven’t read much of the original Logan but that’s beside the point of this review.

This issue moves beyond the Orphans of X storyline from a couple of issues ago and brings some of the characters we saw there along with it. Amber Griffen suffered tragedy at the hands of a young X-23 and she and Laura want to bring the person behind the murder of her father to justice. Fortunately, with Wolverine on the scent they have a pretty good chance of success.

Issue: All-New Wolverine #32

Name: The Orphans
Published: March 2018 by Marvel Comics

Blurb:

Creators:

Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Djibril Morissette-Phan
Colorist: Nolan Woodard
Letterer: VC’s Cory Petit

Characters:

The Good: Wolverine (Laura Kinney) aka X-23, Henry Sutter, Amber Griffen, Ryan Griffen
The Bad: Zander, Chad Newman

My Reading:

Amber and Wolverine head out on a hunt to track down whoever paid the Weapon X program to send Laura to kill Amber’s dad. It turns out Ryan Griffen was a secret service agent assigned to protect a presidential candidate and he was collateral damage when the candidate was targeted by the Nazi loving Chad Newman.

After the assassination, Newman fled the country and ended up in Vanuatu where we get to see Wolverine kick butt in a gaudy Hawaiian shirt. Amber gets in her share of butt kicking as well and when it’s all over and they’ve nabbed their Nazi, they put on Amber’s Nazi-stomping boots and go to town.

What did I learn:

  • Wolverine in a Hawaiian shirt is still kick ass!
  • The Orphans of X are cool with Laura as long as she’s helping them find whoever caused her to kill their relatives.
  • Amber Griffen can take care of herself.

My Thoughts:

First off, I have to say I miss Gabby and Johnathan. Honey Badger and the real wolverine were a fun part of this title that I hope they bring back and since they were in the last issue, maybe I’m overreacting.

As far as the story, I really like the idea of Laura seeking out the people who caused her to hurt and kill during her training. As we’ve seen in previous issues it was a pretty traumatic time for Kinney but this Orphans of X organization makes the strong point that there is a lot of collateral damage whenever Wolverine goes on a rampage. Beyond that the fact that Amber is willing and able to work with Laura to bring Newton to justice gives some validity to Wolverine’s no-kill policy. I just worry that one of these issues is gonna feature a bunch of ‘not-killed’ bad guys ganging up on Laura.

The art was pretty good and the idea of stuffing the Nazi in a suitcase was great. And of course I love the boots Amber brought with her.

My Rating: B+
