My Pull List for Week 51 of 2018

I’m sad to say that while I enjoyed the first issue of Border Town from Vertigo last week, I heard that it was cancelled after 4 issues because of sexual abuse claims against the author. In this day and age you would think that people would know better than to engage in shameful behavior but I guess that’s not the case. I know this is not a new thing either – I’ve had to participate in sexual harassment training since I got into the workplace – and while it is pretty redundant year after year it’s apparent not everyone recognizes common sense. We may be hearing about more and more instances of this despicable behavior but it’s obviously been around for a long time. I just hope with the social stigma and the career implications we start seeing fewer people acting in such deplorable ways. In any case, I’m not gonna be reading any more of that title.

From Marvel Unlimited New Releases:

This week I want to continue a couple of story arcs that were pretty good as well as get into a couple that look promising. This S.H.I.E.L.D one looks a bit strange since it started back in 2011 and is only now finishing but I’ve heard good things about it.

  • S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 by Jonathan Hickman, Dustin Weaver, and Sonia Oback. Published by Marvel Comics, 2011 – This one is the start of the title and somehow it began back in 2011 and looks like it is now finishing this month (at least in Marvel Unlimited).
  • The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #33 by Ryan North, Derek Charm, and Rico Renzi. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – I read the first issue of this story arc where the gang heads into an Escape Room and it was pretty cool.
  • The Punisher #224 by Matthew Rosenberg, Stefano Landini, and Lee Loughridge. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – This is another that was published on Marvel Unlimited not too long ago but the latest issue #226 on Unlimited looks pretty good too.
  • Venom #2 by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – The first issue was a pretty good setup so I’m looking forward to this one.
  • Star Wars: Darth Vader #17 by Charles Soule and David Curiel. Published by marvel Comics, 2018 – this continues the fight on Mon Cala and I’m wondering what’s happened to that Jedi that was still around.
  • Domino #2 by Gail Simone and David Baldeon. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – Once again, the first issue was fun but somehow I missed the 2nd and now #3 is out on MU – I gotta keep better track of things.
  • Infinity Countdown: Darkhawk #1 by Chris Sims, Chad Bowers, and Gang Hyuk Lim. Published by Marvel Comics, 2018 – I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Darkhawk so this should be interesting.

From Comixology:

This week I picked titles from a variety of publishers along with some that go back to first issues. Firefly and American Carnage are continuations from the past few weeks though…

  • X-O Manowar #1 by Matt Kindt and Tomas Giorello. Published by Valiant Comics, 2017 – I’ve heard of this title in the past and have wanted to give it a try. I’m not sure what struck my interest this week but with issue #22 coming out I thought it might be time to read the first issue of this series and see how I like it.
  • Friendo #1 by Alex Paknadel and Martin Simmonds. Published by Vault Comics, 2018 – Issue #3 came out this week and the story is still getting buzz so I figured I should give this a look and what do you know, ultraviolence and virtual reality…sounds kinda interesting.
  • American Carnage #2 by Bryan Hill and Leandro Fernandez. Published by Vertigo, 2018 – This had a pretty brutal beginning with lynchings and bombings but issue 1 set the stage for what could be an interesting tale.
  • Gideon Falls #1 by Jeff Lemre and Andrea Sorrentino. Published by Image Comics, 2018 – Issue #9 was released this week and it’s getting good reviews but while I purchased the initial #1 back when it came out, it’s been sitting in my “to Read” pile. It’s time I give this one a look.
  • Freedom Fighters #1 by Robert Venditti and Eddy Barrows. Published by DC Comics, 2018 – The Nazis won WWII and while this is not The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime, I want to see DC’s take on the concept.
  • Firefly #2 by Greg Pak and Dan McDaid. Published by BOOM! Studios, 2018 – I enjoyed the show, I enjoyed the first issue, and I have been waiting for the second issue.

From Marvel Unlimited 1963:

These three seem to be stuck for some reason but I’m gonna make a concerted effort to read through them this week so I can get closer to finishing off 1963. With Comic Book Herald starting up their My Marvelous Year again in January I would like to be almost done with 1963 before I start their yearly reading lists.

  • Avengers #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  Published by Marvel Comics, 1963.
  • Tales of Suspense #45 by Stan Lee and Don Heck.  Published by Marvel Comics, 1963.
  • Tales to Astonish #47 by Stan Lee and Don Heck.  Published by Marvel Comics 1963.
