First Look Review Of Ice Cream Man #1

From the name of this series I certainly had no idea what it was about but I heard good things when it came out earlier this year. I suppose even after reading this first issue I’m not completely sure where this series is going but regardless, after this issue, I’m looking forward to seeing where it’s headed.

Ice Cream Man #1: Raspberry Surprise by W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo. Published by Image Comics, 2018

This issue starts off innocently enough with one of the most common childhood events – the musical wonder of an ice cream truck driving down your street. And just as when I was younger, the kids are running after it to get their favorite flavor. That’s about the only scene in this tale that isn’t creepy, disturbing, or down right scary and between Prince’s script and Morazzo’s art they really make this first issue tense.

It seems the McAllister couple has gone missing and some detectives are assigned to find out what’s happened. 5V and Briggs head over to the family’s address to investigate and enter a surreal world of desiccating bodies, cat eating monsters, spiders, and a little kid named Byron.

I would have expected this series to kick off in October for Halloween but jumping into the horror genre in January worked out well for Image Comics as I truly see this first issue as a success. I didn’t like the spider though as I had to hide this comic from Mrs. Redshirt, as I was reading, since she suffers from arachnophobia.

I’m not usually one for horror but the familiarity of the setting, the remembrance of the admonition to not talk to strangers, and the deliberate pacing of this comic make this a series I want to come back to. And from what I’ve heard, this story is just the tip of the iceberg since we’re getting an anthology that’ll follow along in the style of Tales from the Crypt. I just hope there aren’t any more spiders in future issues.

I give this issue a First Look Rating of a A-.
